The tours included everything of interest to me in each country visited. The guides were brilliant, particularly Tam in the second leg of the Vietnam tour. The hotels were great, bar a glitch with the boat Amanda. The meals were a great way to safely enjoy local food.

Best Time to Visit Laos
Laos has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The most pleasant time to visit is November to March, when the weather is cooler, dry, and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
Dry Season (November – March)
Cool mornings and warm afternoons make this the best time to explore temples, trek in the hills, and cruise the Mekong. Landscapes are lush after the rains, and festivals bring colour and celebration.
Hot Season (April – May)
Temperatures rise, especially in lowland areas. It’s a good time for river activities and visiting higher elevations like Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. Early mornings are best for sightseeing.
Wet Season (June – October)
Rainfall brings dramatic skies and green landscapes. Travel is slower, but quieter, and waterfalls are at their most impressive. It’s a beautiful time for photography and cultural immersion.
Food & Drink in Laos
Lao cuisine is fresh, fragrant, and deeply tied to the land. Meals are often shared, with sticky rice at the centre and bold flavours from herbs, fermented sauces, and grilled meats.
Must-Try Dishes:
Laap (Larb) – A minced meat salad with lime, mint, chilli, and toasted rice powder. Considered the national dish.
Sticky Rice (Khao Niew) – Served in woven baskets, eaten with the fingers, and paired with almost every meal.
Or Lam – A hearty stew from Luang Prabang, made with vegetables, meat, and local herbs.
Grilled River Fish** – Freshly caught and seasoned with lemongrass and chili.
Khao Piak Sen – A comforting noodle soup with chicken or pork, similar to pho but thicker and chewier.
Try Lao coffee, strong and sweet with condensed milk, or Beerlao, the country’s beloved lager. Fruit shakes and herbal teas are popular, and Lao whisky (lao-lao) may be offered in village settings.
