Malta Holidays

One of the most popular tourist destinations amongst UK travellers for years, a holiday in Malta will never fail to please. With fantastic sun-kissed beaches, incredible architecture and impressive history, Malta is an ideal location for your Mercury Holiday.

Mainland Malta, along with its sister islands Gozo and Comino, offer a significant benefit to holidaymakers in their use of English as a national language and the prospect of simply packing up and going without the need for a visa, making the archipelago perfect for both a convenient and stress-free holiday. Malta is also a great choice for singles as well as couples and families providing vast amounts of entertainment and places to visit throughout the island.

Take in the breadth of Malta's culture

Once you step off your flight, you'll find yourself in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta's outstanding location makes it a great year-round choice with hot summers and mild weather in the winter. Combined with a warm welcome from the locals and the island will start feeling like a home from home in no time!

Any visitor to the Maltese islands must take in the capital Valletta while they are there. This magnificent fortified 16th-century city (a UNESCO world heritage site famed for its baroque architecture) also enjoys a cosmopolitan vibe, with narrow streets fusing together an intricate, labyrinthine design alongside chic international boutiques. The island's history is world famous and makes up the basis its culture. Ensure you also visit the old capital Mdina, known as the silent city, simply wander through its streets and you'll feel like you have been transported back to medieval times.

Wondering where to stay in Malta? Check out Sliema and St. Julians which have much to offer to those who want to experience the very best of the island, including a fantastic selection of restaurants and shopping opportunities. Nearby Paceville is also famed as the entertainment hub of the island for those looking for a great night out. Alternatively, those looking for a more sedate holiday should look at quieter Qawra and Bugibba for a relaxing getaway.

When it comes to picking your hotel, you're spoilt for choice in any resort as there are an enviable selection or properties across the island meaning you can choose any type of holiday from us - from great value cheap package holidays to living in the lap of luxury.

Things to do in Malta

Malta has a host of exciting adventures to explore. Whether you’re looking to indulge in some of the best culinary dishes this side of the Mediterranean, or you want to immerse yourself in a culture which stretches back hundreds of years, this is the perfect island paradise for you. Here are just a handful of reasons to visit.

Best food and drink

Pastizzi. Mushy peas and ricotta are delicately packaged inside a tender filo pastry, which can be picked up for a very reasonable price on practically any major street corner. The contrast of the crunchy, golden pastries and their soft, vibrant green stuffing make for a feast for both the belly and the eyes.

Lampuki pie. Lampuki are a type of fish who migrate through the Maltese peninsular on an annual basis. They’re enjoyed in a number of ways, but arguably the most popular is in pie form. The crust of the pies themselves are usually designed to be shaped like the tasty fish they contain.

Imqaret. Round off your lunch with one of these delicious date cakes, which are shaped like diamonds and commonly served with ice cream. Perfectly bite-sized, these decadent treats are best enjoyed in moderation – which is tricky because of how tasty they are.

Best beaches

Golden Bay Beach. Arguably the most popular beach in Malta, this Mediterranean paradise offers the perfect blend of state-of-the-art amenities, as well as a true taste of nature. Modern additions, such as restrooms, snack bars, changing rooms, and even hotels line the shore. But this has done little to harm local greenery, which has been allowed to flourish. This serves as the perfect backdrop to your day in the sun.

Ir-Ramla il-Hamra. This idyllic spot offers something a little different for visitors, who will be able to escape the hustle and bustle of the world in this tucked-away beach. Surrounded by green farmland on either side, the red sands of Ir-Ramla il-Hamra are perfect for those looking to unwind in nature, while enjoying the cool sea breeze.

Mellieha Bay. The perfect spot for a family day trip, the ocean at this beach remains knee-deep or shallower for the first 50 metres stretched out beyond the coast. Water sports are also popular here, with windsurfing, waterskiing, and kayaking all common sites. What’s more, Mellieha Bay also receives a Blue Flag label for its safety levels.

Best sights

Grandmaster’s Palace. As illustrious as the name suggests, the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta was the seat of power for the country between the 16th and late 18th century. Most of this prestigious building is open to the public, with artefacts of particular interest found in the State Rooms and the armoury. Magnificent works of art are also found littered throughout, including The Great Siege Frescoes by Matteo Perez d’Aleccio.

The Ggantija Temples. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these iconic works of the ancient world are amongst the oldest archeological sites anywhere on the planet. The jury is still out on exactly when they were constructed, but it’s generally agreed it happened some time between 2,200-3,600BC. The temples are a must-see for anyone with a penchant for history.

Verdala Palace. Serving as both a military prison and a royal palace, the Verdala Palace is now a private residence. And while you can’t explore inside it, there are a host of beautiful walks to enjoy in the Buskett Gardens which line this aesthetically astounding building.
