Thalassa Boutique Hotel and Spa - Adults Only

Having stayed in a number of hotels across Cyprus over the years, we were looking forward to our stay at Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa. Overall, we’ve had an enjoyable holiday, but unfortunately this isn’t a hotel we would choose to return to.

There are definitely positives. The pool area is excellent – always quiet, clean and well maintained, and unlike many hotels, there is never a problem finding a sunbed, regardless of the time of day. The waiting staff are consistently polite and professional, and the hotel itself is generally clean.

However, despite these positives, the hotel somehow feels… soulless. It’s difficult to explain, but there is very little atmosphere. Staff carry out their roles efficiently, but there is none of the warmth, laughter or genuine friendliness that we’ve experienced in so many other hotels in Cyprus. Interactions feel purely transactional, and the hotel never quite creates that relaxed, welcoming holiday feeling.

The food was another disappointment. We only ate from the à la carte menu in the evening once, ordering the spaghetti Bolognese, and it was genuinely one of the poorest hotel meals we’ve had. It was completely lacking in flavour, grey in colour with virtually no sign of tomato, and tasted like plain boiled mince. It was inedible.

Housekeeping was also inconsistent. On one day our room wasn’t serviced at all. When we contacted reception, rather than an apology we were simply told someone could come “within the next two hours.” There was no acknowledgement of the inconvenience or offer of fresh towels in the meantime, which left us feeling more like we were causing a problem than reporting one.

Our departure day summed up our experience. Before breakfast we asked about a late checkout and were told this would be possible, although we would need to move our luggage to another room later in the day. We were perfectly happy with this arrangement. However, after breakfast we were informed that this had been an error and there were, in fact, no rooms available. While we appreciate that mistakes happen, it was extremely disappointing to be given the option and then have it withdrawn a short time later, especially when it affected our plans for the day.

After ten days, some of the smaller details also become noticeable. The pool loungers don’t have cushions, which makes them surprisingly uncomfortable over a longer stay. Several of the pool towels are now very thin and threadbare and are due for replacement. While the hotel is clean overall, parts of it are beginning to feel tired, and some facilities haven’t been well maintained. For much of our stay, one of the pool-level toilet cubicles was either flooded or out of order.

None of these issues individually ruined our holiday, and we’ve still enjoyed our time here. However, taken together they mean the hotel never quite delivers the premium boutique experience its rating suggests.

If you’re looking for a peaceful hotel with a lovely pool, this may suit you. However, if you’re looking for the warm hospitality, attention to detail and genuine sense of welcome that Cyprus is renowned for, we’ve experienced many other hotels on the island that provide a far better overall experience. For us, this was an average stay rather than a memorable one, and we will choose somewhere else for our next visit.

We recently returned from a week at this hotel. WOW! Were do you start with the superlatives for this hotel. Location is fantastic, views from our balcony were breathtaking, sunset sea view with a glass of wine - bliss. We stayed B&B and the breakfast was great, an abundance of choice. As we arrived late at night, the hotel had left us a bottle of wine, a tray of sandwiches, crisps, some fruit, bottle of water and a selection on mini cakes in our room, such a lovely touch. Pool area was lovely too, no sunbed wars as there were plenty of sun loungers to go around. The thing that separates this hotel, to any hotel we have ever stayed in, is the staff, We've stayed in 5 star hotels in Vegas, New York and Mexico, never have we come more pleasant, respectful hotel staff. Whoever is recruiting for this hotel is doing a fantastic job. Nothing was too much trouble. As you walk into reception, you feel a sense of calm and their signature scent throughout the hotel is lovely. We will definitely be returning to this amazing hotel on this beautiful island.
