Breathtaking Villa, But the Resort Experience Fell Short

We stayed in a beautiful one-bedroom villa with a private pool, and the villa itself was undoubtedly the highlight of our stay. The space, design and sheer scale were breathtaking. Being right on the beach, with our own pool and so much room to relax, felt incredibly special. The size, privacy and opulence of the villa were exactly what you imagine when you think of a luxury villa resort.

Unfortunately, the experience beyond the villa did not match those expectations.

When booking, we upgraded to a beachfront villa expecting to enjoy the location and beachfront setting. However, when we ventured down to the beach, we were extremely disappointed. The beach area did not appear to have been maintained or cleaned for some time and unfortunately resembled a neglected area rather than the beautiful beachfront setting we had imagined. We were advised at check-in that we needed to sign a disclaimer acknowledging that we would not swim at the beach, which was disappointing given the resort's beachfront positioning.

The resort itself was extremely quiet during our stay. In fact, we felt like we were almost the only guests there. We barely saw anyone else throughout our entire stay, which created a very unusual atmosphere for what should be a vibrant five-star resort.

The advertised buffet breakfast was not operating. Instead, we were required to complete a menu each evening and return it to reception, with breakfast then delivered to our villa the following morning. While the food itself was nice, the experience felt more like a room-service arrangement than the relaxed luxury breakfast we were expecting. Everything arrived individually plated and covered in a large amount of plastic wrap, which felt unnecessary. The menu also became quite repetitive after a few days.

As part of our package, we also received lunch or dinner each day. Unfortunately, this followed the same pattern — a limited menu delivered to the villa — and after a couple of days the meals became repetitive and lacked the variety you would expect from a luxury resort.

The spa was another area where we felt the resort fell short. With "Spa" in the resort name, I had expected something truly special, particularly as I was celebrating my 60th birthday and was hoping for a memorable experience. The aromatherapy massage was pleasant enough, but it was nothing exceptional and did not feel significantly different from the many excellent, affordable massages available throughout Thailand. At 3,000 baht, it felt extremely expensive compared with the quality and experience provided.

I also tried the facial treatment, with only one option available on the menu. This was priced at 3,300 baht and involved an oil treatment with intermittent use of a stone, which was described as a special oil and special stone treatment. Unfortunately, the treatment left my forehead with visible skin irritation and damage. After raising my concerns, the resort was understanding and did not charge me for the facial.

I also mentioned to the spa that, particularly during low season, some more competitive pricing or special offers would have been appreciated, as the treatments felt overpriced for what was delivered. I left the spa feeling disappointed and that the experience did not represent good value.

The villa itself is genuinely beautiful, and the beachfront location has the potential to be stunning. However, a five-star resort is about much more than an incredible room — it is the atmosphere, dining experience, service, facilities and attention to detail that create the complete experience.

For us, Maikhao Dream Villas & Spa had the foundations to be exceptional, but it did not deliver the luxury holiday experience we were expecting. A beautiful villa in a beautiful setting, but significant improvements are needed for the resort experience to truly match its five-star claim.
