My family and I ate at Xul Ha and the experience received and service was far beyond fantastic. Luis, Leo, Edwardo, and Ivan provided excellent service. Luis especially was our server and provided great hospitality and excellent service and catered to all our needs during dinner service. He even noticed me constantly itching due to the mosquitos and offered me bug spray! Such a keen eye of him. Highly would recommend and would go back! The food was excellent and presentation of food was high quality.
We had a great experience dining at this restaurant. The stuffed chicken was amazing!! The server Luis and manager Eban were very helpful and kind. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
This hotel is absolutely unsuitable for a vacation and is quite simply a disaster. I stayed at the Viva Azteca hotel for two weeks, from 01.07.2026 to 15.07.2026. I chose this hotel with complete confidence due to the incredibly good reviews on social media and other platforms. However, reality was the exact opposite. The hotel buildings are totally outdated and run-down. The property appears spacious but is actually quite cramped. I could perhaps understand the hotel being old, but the lack of cleanliness, terrible food, a management team that neither values nor respects its guests, and dirty, salty shower water—these are things I absolutely cannot accept. When I lost my room key card and went to the reception for a new one, they demanded a ridiculous 20 USD. In almost every other hotel, the safety deposit box is free to use, but at the Viva Azteca, you have to pay 2 USD per day. That is an absolute scam. There are water dispensers everywhere for drinking water, but absolutely no one can guarantee their hygiene or cleanliness. Regarding the food, they can't even put together a one-week menu for the all-day dining buffet restaurant. The dishes repeat after just four days. The worst part is that the food is not fresh and has absolutely no flavor. Some dishes even had foam on them, which makes it blatantly obvious that old, already-cooked food is just being reheated and served. The meat was extremely tough; you had to use real force just to chew it. Some pieces of meat were completely uncooked. After eating this hotel food for 10 days, I developed severe dysentery. And I wasn't the only one—my husband and our friends suffered from the same illness. At first, I thought the food tasted bad to me simply because of cultural differences. But on the day we went home, we bought food at an airport restaurant, and it was unbelievably fresh and ten times more delicious than the food at the hotel. It is incredibly obvious that the chefs at Viva Azteca are completely incompetent. The food at the à la carte restaurants serving dinner every evening is only slightly better than the buffet. The tables outside the buffet restaurant are filthy and covered in bird droppings. You can count the number of friendly staff members in this hotel on one hand. The staff are not only unfriendly, but they serve you with an aggressive look, as if they are about to extort you. It feels like the guests are the ones who have to serve them. When the management team itself treats guests with such rudeness and disrespect, it's no surprise that their subordinates are equally unfriendly and impolite. The food served at the pool bar is clearly just leftovers recycled from the buffet restaurant. It also seems like they never properly scrub or clean the pool. There is thick green algae stuck to the inner edges of the pool. It even stained the swimsuits of some guests! The pool's water pump is broken, so the water is extremely dirty and murky with trash, and there is a floating layer of sunscreen oil from the swimmers on the surface. Furthermore, the floor of the pool bar doesn't have a separate drainage system. Whether they are washing the floor or it's raining, all the dirty wastewater from the pool bar flows directly down into the swimming pool below. There are nowhere near enough sunbeds in the shade around the pool. The pool rules and regulations are completely inconsistent. The policy states that sunbeds cannot be reserved, but in reality, every single sunbed is reserved. Down at the beach, there are massive accumulations of Sargassum seaweed. It is thigh-deep, making it impossible to swim, and the stench is unbearable. The shower water is salty and reeks of fish. The saltiness of the water even caused dehydration fine lines to appear around my eyes. Because their water is so unsanitary, the bedsheets, blankets, pillows, and bathrooms all smell strongly of fish. If I had stayed at this hotel for more than two weeks, I probably would have mutated into a living fish. My entire body smells like fish. I reported all of the above issues to the hotel management, but not only was there zero improvement, they haven't offered a single word of apology to this day. My vacation was incredibly disappointing and a total nightmare.
