- Sunset Fishermen Beach Resort
This luxurious and peaceful spa resort is located right in the heart of the beautiful Riviera Maya in an exclusive, private residential area of Playa del Carmen, the hot spot for international travelers. With daily shuttles to downtown Playa del Carmen guests have full access to an array of exciting activities throughout the area or they can simply choose to soak up the sun and swim in the sea along the beautiful and secluded stretch of beach that runs the entire length of the resort, just steps from their rooms.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
My family and I recently stayed at Sunset Fisherman, and overall we had a wonderful experience.
This is not a brand-new luxury resort, but it is incredibly clean, cozy, and well maintained. The rooms have everything you need for a comfortable stay, and the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing.
What truly makes this hotel stand out is its staff. Every single person we interacted with, from the front desk to the pool bar and restaurant, provided exceptional service. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care about making our stay enjoyable.
The hotel offers a different dinner theme every night (Italian, Mediterranean, Mexican, etc.), which is a great idea. Unfortunately, the Italian dinner on Friday was the weakest meal of our stay. The pasta for the kids was good, but the pizzas seemed undercooked, the lasagna wasn’t very good, and the beef with potatoes and vegetables was extremely tough. Thankfully, the desserts were delicious, and despite the food, the service remained outstanding.
Breakfast the following morning completely changed our impression of the restaurant. The buffet was excellent, with a wide variety of options and an egg station where they prepare eggs exactly the way you like them. Lunch was also enjoyable, although I believe the fried fish may have been cooked while still partially frozen, leaving the inside undercooked.
Saturday’s Mediterranean dinner was absolutely fantastic and easily our favorite meal of the trip. The salads, soups, chicken, beef, and desserts were all delicious. A very special thank you to the staff for surprising our little girl with a birthday cake. That thoughtful gesture meant a lot to our family and made her birthday even more memorable.
One thing future guests should know is that dinner is à la carte rather than buffet. Because the hotel operates with a relatively small staff, service can be quite slow at dinner. On Friday, we were seated at 8:30 p.m. and didn’t leave the restaurant until almost 10:30 p.m. The staff remained courteous and professional the entire time, but the wait was definitely longer than expected. If you or someone in your party has dietary restrictions or food allergies, I highly recommend letting the hotel know as soon as you arrive so they can prepare your meals in advance. That will make your dining experience much smoother.
The pool bar was another highlight. Marcos and the rest of the bartending team were outstanding. My only suggestion would be to improve the tequila selection. They only had one bottle of Don Julio, and once it was gone there wasn’t a comparable replacement. The other reposado tequilas available were noticeably lower quality.
One thing worth mentioning is the beach. During our stay there was a significant amount of sargassum along the shoreline. I understand this is a natural seasonal issue that affects much of the Riviera Maya and is not the hotel’s fault, but it’s something future visitors should be aware of if spending time on the beach is a priority.
In the end, what made us recommend Sunset Fisherman wasn’t luxury—it was the people. Great service can make all the difference, and this team consistently went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. While there are certainly areas that could be improved, the warmth, professionalism, and dedication of the staff more than made up for them. If you’re looking for a smaller, comfortable beachfront hotel with genuinely caring people who do everything they can to make you feel at home, Sunset Fisherman is a place I would happily recommend.
My family & I always enjoy our annual vacation (February 14-21, 2026) at Fishermen because of the excellent employees. Marcial is the first to greet us and remembers everyone's name. My grandkids enjoy joking with him. Valeria at the front desk, along with all her staff, makes certain all our requests are met. The housekeeping staff keep our rooms immaculate. The wait staff serve us the delicious food, and ensures that there is no cross contamination with nuts for my grandson's allergy He loves their fish tacos! And a very special recognition to Yedid, the member's service representative. She is very attentive, yet professional, as she deals with all our diverse personalities and special requests. Yedid recently joined the Fishermen staff and we hope to see her for many more years Thank you! Sharon Henderson
Valeria, Tonatiuh and Victor were most helpful, joyful staff. Had a wonderful week with my husband. Met nice people in the pool that made our stay more fun
Having just returned home from Sunset Fisherman Beach Resort, we already miss it.
From the moment we arrived, we were blown away. Walking into the resort and seeing the stunning beachfront setting was breathtaking. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, with a peaceful, intimate atmosphere that makes it so easy to relax.
Our room was immaculate throughout our stay—spotlessly clean, comfortable, and equipped with everything we could possibly need, and more.
We stayed all-inclusive, and the food exceeded every expectation. This wasn’t the typical all-inclusive experience; so much of the food was freshly cooked to order, and every meal was delicious. The quality, presentation and variety were outstanding.
What made this holiday truly unforgettable, though, was the people. Every single member of staff made us feel genuinely welcome and valued. They somehow managed to make us feel like we were the only guests in the resort. Their kindness, warmth and attention to detail were second to none, and nothing was ever too much trouble.
A very special thank you to Guillermo, Armando, Marcos, Riguberto, Ivan, Ramiro, Argenis and Moriela. Every one of you made our holiday so special. Your genuine smiles, kindness and exceptional service never went unnoticed, and you are a huge reason why we fell in love with this resort. You are all an absolute credit to Sunset Fisherman.
We’ve been fortunate enough to stay in some wonderful places over the years, but this resort is truly something special. The stunning location, exceptional food, immaculate accommodation and, above all, the incredible staff combined to create one of the best holidays we’ve ever had.
One final thing… we’re sorry England knocked Mexico out of the World Cup just after we left! 🇬🇧⚽ But if it’s any consolation, Mexico definitely won when it comes to hospitality, food, beautiful beaches and the warmest people we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. We’ll be back!
Thank you for giving us memories we’ll treasure forever.
We stayed at Fisherman’s for a week at the end of June through July 6th. We had a wonderful time. As always the best part of Fisherman is being greeted by Marcial. He knows everything! He helped get us get cabs all week and with a party of 7 we used Gabo and his van to easily get around.
Breakfast was delicious and we were well taken care of by Rigoberto and Ivan. They always remembered our drink orders and our preferences. They even got the kitchen to make Jello for my son because it is his favorite.
Lunch at the beach front snack bar was on point every day. I highly recommend the grilled grouper and had plenty of margaritas from Marcus Ramiro and Guillermo.
Andy ran the activities all week and seemed to tailor them to the vibe of the crowd. This week everyone loved pool volleyball so that was a given everyday but I also liked that he did unique things like water balloons and corn dog tasting. We even did kayaks!
We loved Barbara and Wendy at the swim up bar. My daughter loved the frozen lemonade and they made her feel special by always knowing her order.
We were lucky enough to be there when México was playing in the World Cup game and the vibes were high!!!
Fishermen is like a second home and the staff treats us like family. I can’t recommend this place enough!!! 100 stars!!!
