The hotel Riu Cancun allows guests to enjoy their holidays freely without limits, without worries, and taking time to relax. This luxury hotel is located in 10 min walking distance to the beach in Cancún's hotel district. There is a plethora of bars and restaurants as well as a shopping centre in the vicinity. The centre of Cancún, which lies 1 km away, may easily be reached by making use of public transportation for which a stop is located directly in front of the hotel. The international airport lies about 20 km away.
This was our first time in Mexico. We would highly recommend the Riu Cancun. A special mention must go to Santos who greeted us and saw us depart. He carried our bags to and from our room and always had a cheery smile on his face whenever I saw him in the hotel. The steakhouse at Turquesa was excellent as was the Japanese and Italian restaurants. The staff at the poolside bar were quick and friendly. The entertainment in the evening was outstanding. We have booked to go again next September.
Overall, we had a nice stay at RIU Cancun, but the hotel is starting to show its age. The rooms are in need of updating and look quite tired in places. The hotel seemed to cater more towards Spanish and American guests than British visitors, although this did not significantly affect our holiday. The staff were excellent throughout our stay. A special mention goes to the gardening team, cleaners, pool attendants, lifeguards, security staff, and the beach attendant. They are the unsung heroes of the hotel and work incredibly hard to keep everything running smoothly. The food was typical of many all-inclusive hotels, fairly bland and with a very repetitive menu that changed little from day to day. On a positive note, the beer and spirits were very good, with plenty of choice available. One downside is that there is not much to do or see within walking distance of the hotel. Overall rating: 4/5 A pleasant stay thanks to the hardworking staff and good drinks, but the hotel would benefit from room renovations and a wider variety of food options.

Hotel reception and lower part of hotel is amazing. However, rooms are very dated they could do with being updated.
Having to always carry a room key is inconvenient and outdated. As a female in a swimsuit or evening dinner dress I don’t have pockets to carry a room key. Elevators were not working everyday. They were being serviced several times per day. Not one vs another. We even got stuck in the elevator. Buttons didn’t light up and the elevator wouldn’t stop. Scary to say the least. It was always something. Lastly the beds are terrible. Please make upgrades to align with your competitors.
