Kollam

In the south of Kerala, India, Kollam is a city known for being a trade hub as well as for being home to glorious beaches.

Dating back to ancient times, it is one of the oldest ports in Kerala, now popular with tourists due to its location at the southern gateway to India’s backwaters.

When to go

Located on the southwestern coast of India, Kerala is hot all year around with temperatures averaging between 27°C and 33°C. From November to May, the sun shines for around 10 hours per day.

Although most of the year is dry, the monsoon season does last from June through to September with the majority of the days including rainfall.

Top Attractions

Holidays in Kollam offer a wealth of things to do. The town is famous for cashew processing and coir (rope) manufacturing.

The serene Ashtamudi Lake is the most visited backwater in Kerala. It’s lined with coconut and palm trees and the houseboat trips and boat cruises are a perfect way to discover Kollam.

To take a trip back in history, stop at the seaside village of Tangasseri to see the ruins of a Portuguese fort and 18th century churches.

Kollam beach is also known as the Mahatma Gandhi beach, part of which is still being used as a major port for international trade. This beach is popular for tourists who want to engage in watersports and boat rides.

For a more laidback, scenic beach visit, try Thirumullavaram. It’s still close to town, yet still secluded.

Culture

Aside from the industrial importance of Kollam, the town is also a major cultural centre with a number of churches, temples and mosques to visit.
