This is a lovely hotel close to the beach. Things that stood out were the staff (they try very hard to please, nothing is too much trouble). The room and standard of cleaning was second to none, food and drink were good quality and available with no restrictions. Our particular thanks go to Marshall in the restaurant who made this a very special stay. The only negative, it seems to get very busy at the weekends.

For our hotel stay this time, we chose the Riu Hotel. It is one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka—a beautiful, delightful, and entertaining place capable of relaxing the mind and bringing happiness. You can also enjoy a range of activities here that are not available at other hotels.
Location
Riu Hotel can be described as a truly beautiful hotel that blends perfectly with the scenic charm of Sri Lanka's Southern Province. The Riu Ahungalla Hotel is a beautiful, large, and impressive hotel located on Galle Road in the town of Ahungalla, in the Galle District. This is a hotel that is easy to locate, facing the beautiful coastline on one side and the main Galle road on the other.

When discussing the RIU Hotel, it is essential to note that this is not a hotel brand native to Sri Lanka; it originated in Spain and operates 102 hotels across 21 countries worldwide, including locations in Sri Lanka and the Maldives within South Asia. Regarding the RIU Hotel in Sri Lanka, it is a property comprising 501 rooms and is spread across a vast, beautiful area. It features four swimming pools catering to different categories. There is a restaurant (Riti Panna), as well as two restaurants serving Asian and Italian cuisine. Facilities also include a gym, a Jacuzzi, and a steam room. There are several restaurants here to provide the beverages you require. You have the facility to obtain food and drinks 24 hours a day—a service not offered by any other hotel in Sri Lanka. If you visit on the weekend, you can also enjoy entertainment programs throughout the night. There is a restaurant here where you can satisfy your hunger in the evening; additionally, if you happen to miss breakfast at the main restaurant, the facility to have it here is also available.
Swimming Pool
The swimming pools here are sure to delight you. You can relax freely in the pool while enjoying alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, hot drinks, or mojitos. There are four main pools, though this specific facility is available only at the adults-only swimming pool. In addition to a swimming pool suitable for both children and adults, there is also a swimming pool designed to appeal to children. In addition, there is another swimming pool for water activities. All these swimming pools are maintained in a very clean condition. All these locations are visually stunning.
Room
The room is spacious, beautiful, clean, and tastefully arranged. It features a large, clean bathroom stocked with body wash, shampoo, and hand wash; toothbrushes are also provided upon request. A large wardrobe is provided for storing clothes, and there is also a safe. A minibar is available as well, and its contents can be enjoyed free of charge. Additionally, an electric kettle for preparing tea or coffee has been provided, along with the necessary tea, coffee, milk, and sugar. A king-size bed and two comfortable chairs for seating are provided. There is also a TV with international channels.
Restaurant and Food
When discussing the dining options here, the main restaurant is the 'Riti Panna' restaurant, which can accommodate a large number of guests. Seating is available both indoors and outdoors. Food is attractively presented across a spacious area. For the three meals we had there, we were served chicken, mutton, beef, and pork; we also had the opportunity to taste tuna, prawns, and squid. Soups and stews, salad mains and desserts are available here, as well as champagne and wine, soft drinks, fruit juices, cordials and tea and coffee. In addition to this, there are also Asian and Italian restaurants here; however, both were closed on the day we visited. Additionally, if you feel hungry in the evening, you can visit the snack bar, or head to the 'After Hours' restaurant for late-night dining. You can order any type of beverage—including alcoholic drinks—at the 'After Hours' venue. You can obtain any type of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage you desire from the Nuwara Bar, Purple Bar, and Pool Bar. You can get a wide range of good food and drinks at all these places.
Service
Regarding the service here, it must be described as exceptionally friendly and impressive. Every staff member we encountered—from security and reception to the chefs—was incredibly cordial. They consistently listen to their customers and provide a truly high standard of service. RIU is a very busy hotel; we greatly appreciate the fact that, no matter how busy or tired they may be, the staff always greet us with a beautiful smile. They are all highly efficient and skilled employees who properly fulfill their responsibilities. We must make special mention of several staff members we encountered: front office staff Thejan and Rakshan; bellboy Kaveen; Surein (service staff); Nihani (security); Nethmi (whom we met in the dining areas); Danindu (Purple Bar) and Adeesha (Pool Bar); pool attendant Dinuwantha; assistant waiters Charuka and Chamuditha; Trainee Chef Yasas; Keshan (whom we met during after-hours); and Restaurant Supervisor Chaminda. Roshan from the Restaurant Department and Kaushal, the Cleaning Supervisor.
Others
*If you are planning to visit the Riu Hotel, the best days to book your stay are Fridays or Saturdays. Avoid scheduling your stay for a Wednesday, as you will miss out on the nightclub and entertainment activities you might be looking forward to.
You can obtain plenty of alcohol here; the spirits are locally produced, while the wines are imported.
You can choose between two check-in times here: 12:00 PM or 3:00 PM.
As soon as you check into the hotel, make a reservation for either the Italian or Asian restaurant, and also book a slot for the Jacuzzi and steam room; otherwise, you might miss out on these services.
My 4th or 5th time at RIU. This time i felt the taste of the food have reduced compared to earlier times as well as the quality of the drinks . In spite of the hotel being busy there was no quality Entertainment Activity, the band was playing sleepy music and the crowd just didnt want to stay around... Hopefully next time we will be able to enjoy the food & drinks more.
