The InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort spans over a breathtaking area on the island, offering magnificent views of the Bay of Balaclava. Situated to the north of Port-Louis, the capital city, the hotel is conveniently positioned within a 15-minute drive of the vibrant shopping, entertainment, and dining hub of Grand Baie. Additionally, it is just a 55-minute journey from Plaisance International Airport.
This resort offers fabulous views of the ocean and 210 elegant, functional, well-furnished and spacious rooms. Guests are welcomed in a lobby with 24-hour reception and check-out services. Facilities include a hotel safe, currency exchange and a cloakroom. There is also a hairdressing salon, restaurants, bars, sports facilities, a games room, and a spa offering various treatments. For the younger guests, there is a children's playground and a kids' club. Cars, scooters and bicycles are all available to rent (hire fees apply) and the hotel's concierge is on hand to assist with any request.
Each room has an en suite bathroom with a shower, bath and a hairdryer. Rooms are furnished with double or king-size beds. Amenities include a direct dial telephone, satellite/cable TV, a radio, Internet access and a safe. A minibar, an ironing set and tea and coffee making facilities are also provided. Individually regulated air conditioning is a standard feature in all accommodation. Room upgrades are available at a fee. The hotel has 140 deluxe rooms, 20 of which have hot tubs and private roof terraces. As well as 40 family rooms and 10 duplex ocean suites complete with their own private hot tubs, terraces and balconies, all beautifully designed for guests to relax and make the most of the stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
Pamper yourself with a visit to the spa, which offers massages, body treatments and facials. After dipping into one of the 2 outdoor swimming pools, you can spend some time at the private beach. Additional amenities at this hotel include complimentary wireless Internet access, concierge services and babysitting (surcharge).
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
We just returned from a ten day stay at the Intercontinental. The hotel is set in lovely tropical gardens and is kept extremely clean. The pools are heated and set in lovely surroundings. The beaches are clean but sea swimming can be tricky due to the rocks in the sea but did see some swimmers and lots of activities at the boat house.
We have been fortunate to visit many amazing hotels around the world but the staff and the food sets this hotel apart. The main buffet restaurent is Senso where we were treated with an extensive buffet for breakfast and for dinner. There are several options for everyone but as vegetarians, we were astonished with the taste and variety of dishes on offer. Everything was clearly labelled including eggless cakes.
The staff at Senso are exceptional. At breakfast we are greeted with charming Wesley or Moupiya with a pretty smile. Special thanks to Sebastian, Sephora and Cedric for looking after us. The chefs were always available and treated like family. They would bring us hot channa puris, masala dosa, pau bhaji just to name a few. Special thanks to chefs Jayawantee and Suresh. The fresh juice bar was really good and they made lovely juices to order, special thanks to Tina and Renuka.
In the evening, the variety of food at Senso was abundant with live pizza/pasta station, massive vegetarian section, hot tandoor and lots of vegan options too. Mauritian night is exceptional with local cuisine, outdoor market and entertainment. Special thanks to Vishal who always greeted us with a friendly big smile, Ashish for his wonderful sense of humour, Harish for being a great guy, lovely Vimla and really helpful Ashley. Chef Sajpal was alway ready to make us hot Dal puris. Also thanks to Kuldeep at Pasta bar and Ajay who was always there to help.
Also very big thanks to Pevin at the Sugarcane bar who was always there smiling and helping us from the day we arrived to our last day. I would say Pevin with his understanding of client needs and customer service is definitely a star of the future and can see him progressing to senior management.
Our room was very well laid out with a large balcony and sea view. The bathroom was enormous. Special thanks to Abhi from housekeeping who is amazing. The view from our balcony was really special with swaying palm trees, the sea and lots of cute tropical birds.
Staff made our holiday really special and there are so many to thank. At front desk, Pascaline and Dhrishti, bar staff including Manish who always made special cocktails for us and Albin alway ready to help with a big smile.
The hotel also had three speciality restaurents, our favourite was Veda (separate review) and we also enjoyed pan Asian cuisine at Noble house. Unfortunately we weren’t able to visit Segala, the mediterareen restaurent.

I had an amazing experience at this hotel. The property is beautiful, with a lovely beach and a great atmosphere throughout. The food was very good, and the swimming pool was large, clean, and enjoyable.
A special mention to Drishti at the front desk, who was absolutely amazing. She was very friendly, helpful, welcoming and made us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. Her excellent service really made our stay even more special.
It is a beautiful beach property with great food, a wonderful pool, and excellent hospitality. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would be happy to visit again
