Bathala Hotel

I really loved this resort. Everything from the food to the tranquility was just the best holiday ever. The staff was amazing too., from the bar to the welcoming team. I'd like to give a special shout-out to chef Nishshanka. What an amazing and kind gentleman. He always served with a smile and was super kind to us guests. I really enjoyed watching how the Maldivian Dahl is cooked. I'd really recommend this resort to friends and family.

If there was less than 1 star I wouldn’t have hesitated to give, I know no one can control the weather but the staff were very chilled and didn’t appreciate my situation, I was scheduled to leave the resort at 7:15 am so I can catch my flight, the weather condition was so bad that they kept to move with the boat back and forth to the island where the seaplane should land there and always ended with “We have to go back to Bathala”. This situation happened twice in a row that I was about to encounter seasickness because of that mess.No one was briefing me in person the reasons and what shall we do in details; I have to ask them by myself many times so they can give me the answer which is incomplete answers. We encountered a speedboat leaving Bathala and one of the receptionists who was escorting me was trying to act smart by saying “do you want to take this speedboat instead so you can reach faster?” I told her I didn’t pay for seaplane that will make me reach faster to catch the flight to end up with riding a speedboat that will take more than 2 hours to reach the airport and I can’t guarantee that I could reach the airport on time, the receptionist was almost kidding me or wanted to give any answer by saying “It will reach there in just one hour” , in a meanwhile the speedboat was fully booked and leaving anyway and didn’t decide to wait whether I said yes or no at that time. The acting smart here when the receptionist said to me “If you said yes you could have been with them now”. This was reckless and unprofessional by all means. I kept telling them about my concerns of missing my flight the only thing they say “change your flight we can’t control the weather”, I kept telling them that my ticket is annual leave and if I changed my flight I will pay a-lot and if I missed the flight (No show) I will undergo paying a massive fine and might be leading to investigation, but they don’t want to understand and they didn’t care at all. I was forced to cancel the flight because I missed it anyway and book the next flight that was departing in the evening with non-affordable price so I can go back home on time.I waited in the reception more than 5 hours and had to go to them from time to time to ask about any update because no one was keeping me updated . 3:30 pm, the time I felt that frustrated I talked to the manager by saying “ This is like a detention, if you didn’t do anything and make more effort I’ll call the police so they can do better” he replied with “You have the right to call anyone but we are doing our best”, until it ended up surprisingly with everything was going smooth at that time and everything was ready and good to go. Which means if I didn’t mention the police nothing would’ve changed? All what I want to say that there was alot to do and make more efforts in this case instead of keeping saying “We’re doing our best” and just chilling.Overall the worst experience ever with unprofessional,irresponsible, inconsiderate and uncooperative staff. What I’m really sure about is that I’m not repeating my experience with this resort or the entire country again.

I stayed at Sandies Bathala Maldives from August 4th to 11th, 2026 with my family (two adults and an 8‑year‑old child). The island is beautiful, the sea is extraordinary, and the house reef is truly impressive. The overwater villa is pleasant, and the restaurant and bar staff were always kind and helpful.

However, during my stay I encountered serious maintenance and management issues that I had never experienced before in my 25 trips to the Maldives — not even in other resorts of the Sandies/Planhotel group, such as Thudufushi and Athuruga, where quality and professionalism have always been excellent.

In my overwater villa there was a strong sewage smell, persistent and extremely unpleasant, which was only partially resolved. I immediately reported the issue and wrote directly to the resort manager, requesting a room change or a proper solution, but I never received any reply. Additionally, I noticed mold and other clear maintenance defects that should not exist in a resort of this category.

The most disappointing aspect was the complete absence of the general manager, who was never present, never available, and never intervened despite my formal complaints. The overall management of the island — both in the pre‑arrival communication and during the stay — felt disorganized and far below the standards expected from Sandies.

The island itself is wonderful and the sea is worth the trip, but the quality of the management and the maintenance of the rooms need significant improvement. Comparing Bathala with Thudufushi and Athuruga, the difference is evident: professional and present leadership makes all the difference, and unfortunately it was completely lacking here.
