Disappointing stay – room issues, poor alternative room and construction

We stayed at the Maryland Suites & Spa Resort and unfortunately our experience fell well below what we expected from the holiday we had booked and paid for. There were several issues with our accommodation, including problems with the air conditioning and a leaking shower. We also had concerns regarding the balcony furniture arrangement. Taken together, these issues affected our comfort and enjoyment of the holiday. We raised the problems directly with the hotel manager during our stay. To be fair to the hotel, we were offered the opportunity to move rooms. However, after looking at the alternative, this wasn't really a satisfactory solution. The air conditioning appeared to be the same, and the alternative room's outlook was towards an area containing bins and stored furniture. We therefore didn't feel that moving rooms would actually resolve the problems and would potentially have left us worse off in other respects. There was also construction/refurbishment work taking place outside the hotel, which further affected our experience. We were aware before travelling that some refurbishment was taking place, but we don't feel the information provided beforehand adequately reflected the extent or impact of what we actually encountered. TUI representatives were not continuously available at the hotel. When they were present, they were often busy with other guests or we were out trying to enjoy our holiday. For that reason, we raised our concerns directly with hotel management, who we reasonably believed were the appropriate people to deal with problems concerning the room. What has made the experience more frustrating is TUI's response since we returned. We subsequently complained and were told that no compensation would be offered, partly because the refurbishment had been mentioned before departure and because the other issues supposedly weren't brought to attention while we were away. That latter point is particularly disappointing because we did report the problems to the hotel manager during the holiday, and we were offered an alternative room as a result. The fact that an alternative room was offered itself demonstrates that concerns were raised while we were there. We appreciate that problems can occur at any hotel, and we also acknowledge that management did offer us another room. However, an alternative with what appeared to be the same air-conditioning situation and a view towards bins/furniture storage wasn't, in our opinion, a meaningful resolution. For anyone considering booking, I would strongly recommend checking exactly what refurbishment or construction is taking place at the time of your stay, what impact it may have, and getting any problems reported in writing while you're there. Unfortunately, based on the accommodation issues, construction and subsequent handling of our complaint, we would not choose to return.

Family holiday

We went as a family with our 17 year old daughter. We stayed in a large room that overlooked the golf course, although it hadn’t been refurbished it was clean and tidy with a sofa bed in the living room for our daughter. The beauty of this room was how quiet it was! We didn’t hear the building works at all throughout the week, wherever we were. The pools had plenty of sun beds and it was never an issue to find a bed around 10am. The all inclusive was great (Gordon’s G&T!) lots of salads/fresh fruit throughout the day. The only thing I would say is that the evening meals lacked variety (they could have had clear ‘themed nights’) but all in all, the food was good. We didn’t watch any entertainment but there was a singer outside most nights whilst we were sat at the poolside bar (entertainment was inside so we didn’t want to stay inside) We were able to walk easily to other bars and the beach was about a 20 minute walk away. I would recommend this hotel. Very clean and great staff.

TripAdvisor Review
Great week away.

Location: Great location, supermarket just over the road for anything you need and less than 10 minute walk to shops, bars, restaurants and the beach.

Rooms: We were fortunate to be put in one of the newly refurbished suites and it was done to a very high standard. The design is beautiful and everything feels luxurious. The only slight annoyance is they’re still working on a lot of the rooms so we were woken up at 8am every morning to the sound of banging. Not an issue but would have been nice if reception had given us a heads up when we checked in. The room itself had lots of amenities, the only things that could be improved is in the main bedroom the wardrobe is short so you can’t hang any trousers or dresses without them getting creased, and the sofa bed in the living room is just a mattress topper on top of the sofa. Fine as we only have one child, but I don’t know how comfortable it would be if there were multiple children or if they were older.

Restaurants: The main buffet restaurant is great and has lots of choice. What sets it apart from lots of other all inclusives is they grill fresh meat and fish every evening, so we had steak, lamb shanks, chicken, sea bass etc every night. There isn’t the biggest choice of ‘kids food’ but if you’ve got a fussy eater the pool bar is open all day and night and serves the usual pizza, chips, chicken nuggets, burgers, hot dogs etc. There are 2 à la carte restaurants which looked really nice and you get 1 night included with a week stay, but unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to sample these.

Pool: There are 3 pools, a shallow kids pool, a large pool where kids are allowed inflatables and toys, and then a third pool which is for swimming only. All were great and despite it being peak holiday season it never felt too overcrowded. I had seen terrible reviews about other hotels in Tenerife with people racing for sunbeds but this place is the opposite. There are plenty beds for everyone and plenty parasols to keep shaded. We went down at different times each day from 10am - 2pm and never struggled to get 3 loungers together.

Entertainment: There is so much entertainment on for the kids. There are activities in the main pool every day, usually 4 or 5 things a day. And then at night there are singers or entertainment at the pool bar which is very chill, and if you want something a little louder there is a large disco next to reception which has tribute acts on. There were also craft stalls and clothes stalls every day or so either next to the pool or in reception. There really is something for everyone.

Staff: Were all helpful and lovely, particularly at the pool bar and restaurant where we spent most of our time.

Value: We booked very last minute, I think only about 3 weeks before and it cost less that £2k all inclusive for 2 adults, 1 child for a week which I think is great value for money given the quality of the resort. We booked with Tui and the transfer to the resort was also very quick.

Overall a great hotel and would definitely recommend.

Better than we’d expected

We stayed here for 7 nights at the end of July/beginning of August as a family of four with two teenagers.

We arrived after the buffet had closed (9pm), but the hotel provided a welcome food pack containing pot noodles, crackers, sausage meat, fruit puree pots, and crisps.

Room: We had upgraded to a golf view room (E201), which was in a lovely quiet location at the end of the block. We were told at check-in we’d been upgraded to a duplex, but this wasn’t the case, however we didn’t mind. The room as of Aug 2026 had not been upgraded although it was perfectly fine. The air conditioning wasn’t particularly cold, but leaving it running all the time kept the room comfortable. Our teenagers slept on the sofa beds and found them comfortable enough.

The room was spacious with plenty of storage, a kitchenette and a very large north-facing balcony with a table, chairs and two sun loungers. There was some sunshine during the day, although the built-in washing line never caught the sun. The bathroom was very large and may have been an accessible room, although it only had a bath with a shower attachment. Wi-Fi worked perfectly in the living area but not in the bedroom. I believe this to be reason uk tv channels didn’t work either.

Every morning there would be several moths on the towels we’d left outside overnight, despite the balcony light being off. A quick shake and they flew away, so it wasn’t a major issue. Plus we never saw them in evenings.

Pool: We found four sunbeds without much difficulty at around 9:30am on our first day, but after 10am they became much harder to find. We soon realised it was best to get there before 9:30 and take turns going for breakfast. The lifeguard was very good at removing towels from unattended beds, although this only seemed to happen when she was on duty.

There was no food allowed around the main pool, although the pool bar had plenty of seating. We did see people taking plates of chips to the smaller pool without being challenged. We also noticed quite a few wasps around the hotel, but they generally kept themselves to themselves. On our last day there were more around the smaller pool and, unfortunately, a couple of children were stung, resulting in that pool being closed for the rest of the day.

Food: The buffet offered a good choice at every meal. Breakfast included the usual warm and continental options plus an omelette station. Lunch and dinner always included salads, pizza, chips and a selection of meats and vegetables, with themed evenings for dinner. The food was generally warm, although fresh chips were regularly cooked and seemed to be the hottest thing.

We didn’t use the two à la carte restaurants because the set menus didn’t really suit our family, with one vegetarian and one particularly fussy eater. The teppanyaki restaurant did look like great fun though.

Staff & Entertainment: The staff were friendly, hardworking and the hotel was kept clean. The mini disco/entertainment wasn’t really our thing, but we enjoyed sitting by the pool bar in the evenings playing cards while listening to the live singers, who were the perfect volume for a relaxed evening.

Location: The hotel is around a 20–25 minute walk from the main area of Las Américas, with a taxi back costing around €6–7. Siam Mall is a similar walking distance, with supermarkets along the way for drinks and snacks. There’s also a basic supermarket and a small parade of shops just five minutes from the hotel.

We booked this hotel last minute and were a little concerned after reading recent reviews and Facebook posts mentioning building work and tired rooms. In reality, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel was clean, the staff were excellent, and we had a really enjoyable holiday. It isn’t perfect, but it offered great value and we’d happily stay here again.

Basic but clean

We stayed at Marylanza as a family of six, including two teenagers, and overall we had a decent holiday. If you’re expecting a luxury experience, this probably isn’t the hotel for you. However, if you’re looking for a clean, well-located hotel with everything you need for a comfortable stay, it’s a solid choice.

The rooms are spacious and ideal for families, with a huge balcony giving everyone plenty of room. Our room overlooked Montaña Chayofita, the road and the shops at the rear of the hotel. It wasn’t noisy or disruptive, although the view isn’t the prettiest if that’s important to you. The beds are on the firm side, and while the bathrooms are perfectly adequate, they are quite small if you’re sharing and using the bathroom to get ready.

There were plenty of plug sockets in the room, although there aren’t any USB charging points, so remember to pack your travel adaptors. The fridge was a great addition for keeping drinks cold – ours simply needed switching on when we arrived, and there was a complimentary bottle of water waiting inside. The air conditioning worked well enough to keep the room comfortable, although it never became particularly cold.

The hotel itself is clean throughout, although I’d describe it as fairly basic. Reception staff were friendly, welcoming and spoke English, making everything easy from check-in.

One thing to note is that some of the swim-up rooms are currently being renovated. We stayed in that block and heard renovation work, including a disc cutter, on a handful of occasions. It wasn’t constant and didn’t spoil our holiday, but it’s worth being aware of.

We spent time at both pools. The blue pool was our favourite but had no music playing and we didn’t notice any disruption from the refurbishment work. Inflatables are allowed there too, making it great for families. The green pool had a livelier atmosphere, but you could occasionally hear renovation work taking place above.

There were plenty of parasols around both pools and, despite the usual handful of 7am sunbed reservers, we never struggled to find somewhere to sit at 10am

One frustration was that the pool rules didn’t always seem to be applied consistently. We were told not to leave our sunbeds to go for food or drinks because towels could be removed after around 20 minutes, yet this rule didn’t appear to be enforced for everyone. Food also isn’t allowed around the pool, meaning you need to go to the restaurant or snack bar for lunch, so it felt a little inconvenient having to pack everything up each time or let a member of family stay behind

We also found one of the lifeguards at the green pool quite abrupt. She regularly nudged children into the pool. While this may have been intended as harmless fun, personally I found it a little unprofessional, as I’d rather see the lifeguard focused on supervising the pool. Again, this is simply my personal impression.

During our stay there was an inflatable activity in the pool for under-14s. My daughter was told she could only have one turn, while other children appeared to have multiple turns, which again felt inconsistent.

The food was decent overall with a reasonable selection each day, and there was always plenty of fresh fruit available. However, after a few days it did become very repetitive. As a vegetarian I found my options were very limited, often only being able to choose between salad, pizza or pasta with tomato or cheese sauce.

We used reusable bottles to fill up drinks to save using paper cups and constant trips, there is water machines through the hotel to fill up.

One area that could definitely be improved is food labelling. Some dishes were labelled, but many weren’t, making it difficult to know exactly what ingredients were included. Clearer allergen information, particularly for dishes containing nuts or other common allergens, would make dining much easier for guests with dietary requirements.

The buffet also included a couple of themed evenings during our stay, including Chinese and Spanish nights, which added a bit of variety.

Unfortunately, the snack bar was probably the weakest part of the food offering. We noticed food was sometimes left uncovered and saw guests handling food with their hands before serving themselves. On one occasion my daughter went to get a burger and we noticed what appeared to be fly eggs on the burgers, so she decided not to have one.

We didn’t try the speciality restaurants as the menus simply didn’t appeal to us, so can’t comment on those.

WiFi isn’t particularly great.

Facilities around the hotel are fairly simple but good for families. There’s a free table tennis table, a pool table costing €1 per game, an indoor squash court (although we never saw anyone using it), and a small kids’ club area. Outside the hotel there’s also an outdoor bodyweight gym and a small football/basketball area, which was great as our youngest, wasn’t allowed to use the main gym.

The evening entertainment was pleasant but fairly basic. We preferred sitting outside by the pool bar. We tried the indoor entertainment bar one evening during family bingo but found it quite dark, stuffy and quiet, so after about an hour we moved back outside.

If you enjoy premium drinks, be aware that some, such as bottled Strongbow, could only be purchased from the indoor bars. Unfortunately they had run out about five days into our holiday.

We noticed ants on our balcony, which I’d already read about before travelling and, to be honest, is something I expect occasionally in the Canary Islands. We didn’t have any ants inside the room, so it wasn’t an issue for us.

The location is one of the hotel’s biggest strengths. It’s around a 15-minute walk to the beach and shops. The walk is a little hilly, so sensible footwear is worth packing. There are plenty of gift shops nearby, a supermarket within a couple of minutes’ walk that’s open until around 9.30pm, and a well-stocked 24-hour supermarket just across the road.

You can explore Montaña Chayofita, the volcanic hill opposite the hotel. We walked up for sunrise and the views were fantastic. I’d definitely recommend going early before the heat builds up and wearing suitable shoes.

Overall, I’d describe Marylanza as a hotel with basic rooms, basic food, basic facilities and basic entertainment but It’s clean, comfortable, well located and offers good value for money. We had a decent family holiday.

With a few improvements to the food variety, snack bar, entertainment. food labelling and consistency of the pool rules, it could be even better.

Would we return? No
