Playa Blanca

Located on the southern coast of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is a peaceful resort perfect for couples or families looking for a relaxing getaway. The resort is bordered by 9km of sandy beaches and most of the resort’s attractions can be found along the Playa Blanca boardwalk, adjacent to the Old Town.

When to go

Playa Blanca enjoys a wonderfully warm climate year-round, with the temperature rarely dropping below 15°C. As one might expect, the warmest months are in the summer, from June to September. During these months, there is also (in general) no rain.

If you’d prefer to visit off-peak, we recommend going in October or November when temperatures are still quite warm, with highs of 27°C.

Top Attractions

Playa Blanca is notorious for its beaches, marinas and mountains. But, it’s also home to the first submarine museum in Europe, Museo Atlantico Underwater Museum. Here, you can swim amongst statues.

Nearby you’ll also find some of Lanzarote’s most spectacular scenery including the Timanfaya National Park, Janubio Salt Flats and El Golfo (Green Lagoon). You can also visit the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura via a ferry which departs from Playa Blanca.

Beaches

For those who don’t speak Spanish, it’s worth noting that Playa Blanca translates to ‘white beach’. Ronseal!

Here, you’ll find several beaches, all of which have their own unique appeal. Dorado Beach and Flamingo Beach are popular both for their white sand (surprise, surprise!) and their proximity to hotels in the area. But, a trip to Playa Blanca isn’t complete without a visit to the beaches of Papagayo. Part of a nature reserve, these beaches are surrounded by hills and crystal clear waters ebb and flow on the shore. There are also a handful of ‘secret’ beaches you can discover if you’re looking for some privacy or peace and quiet.

Dining

Local, Spanish cuisine and fresh seafood reign supreme here, but you’ll still find hamburgers and other international cuisines here.

If you’re looking for a fine dining spot, try La Casa Roja. Here, you’ll enjoy beautifully presented food alongside stunning views. There are also vegetarian options. Just make sure you call ahead for a reservation!

For cheap, local eats, try Café Berrugo and for a slice and a pint, try Pizz Burger.

Entertainment

While there are plenty of local places to enjoy an evening drink, Playa Blanca doesn’t cater to those looking for a place to dance until the wee hours of the morning. Instead, find a seat with a view at one of the local restaurants or bars and watch the sun or warm up your vocal chords with some karaoke.

Culture

For a mix of ancient traditions and modern festivities, visit Playa Blanca in late-March, from the 24-25 when locals celebrate Playa Blanca Carnival.

Adventure and Sports

With 9km of beaches, you won’t be short of beach activities here in Playa Blanca. Rent some gear from locals to scuba dive, snorkel or paddleboard if you’re keen to explore underwater. If you’d rather stay (mostly) dry, try your hand at sailing. If you’re looking for a real thrill, you can also jump on a quad bike!

Getting around

You have several options in terms of local transportation in Playa Blanca. For one-off trips, you can hire a taxi or hop on a public bus. There are also ferries that can take you to neighboring islands. If you’re keen to explore on your own, car hire is readily available.
