Amazing stay

We stayed at the hotel in August 2026 and really enjoyed our time there. The hotel has been renovated recently and has a nice modern look. The food quality and diversity is great. I want to give special thanks and appreciation to the animation team who did a great job every single day. The energy they give and the attitude to what they do is precious to see. The activity Star Watching was something we will remember for the rest of our lives. Many thanks for everything and we hope to come back soon.

Cheers, Alla and Richard

TripAdvisor Review
12 nights at Lopesan Costa Meloneras – the good, the bad & the busy!

Beautiful resort, but is Unique worth it?

We’ve just returned from a 12-night stay at the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort Spa & Casino. I always like to leave an honest review because I know how much I rely on reviews when booking holidays, so hopefully this helps someone make an informed decision.

Overall, we had a lovely holiday. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, the grounds are immaculate and there are some fantastic members of staff who genuinely go above and beyond. However, there are definitely a few things we would consider before returning.

The not-so-good

Sun loungers – the biggest issue for us

The biggest problem was the constant battle for sun loungers. To be fair, the hotel does try its best to police people reserving beds and we did see notices being left on towels. However, with the sheer number of guests, it seems almost impossible to prevent.

If you want a sunbed close to the pool, good luck finding one after around 10am!

We actually had sunbeds right by the pool and went into the infinity pool to swim. We were probably in there for around 10 minutes when we returned to find a notice saying our towels would be removed. We completely understand the policy and why the hotel has it, but when you’re literally in the pool directly in front of your sunbeds, it did feel a little excessive.

The same issue applies to the Unique pool area. We upgraded to Unique and although you get access to the separate Unique pool, you still have the same problem with sun loungers.

That said, if you don’t mind being a little further away from the pool, the terrace with the jacuzzi is fantastic. It was much quieter and there was hardly anyone up there during our stay. For us, this was one of the best perks of Unique.

The buffet

The food itself is really good — there is plenty of choice and something for everyone. The problem is actually getting to it!

The layout of the buffet doesn’t seem particularly well thought through and at busy times you can be waiting quite a while for your food. Personal space also seems to disappear completely. On one occasion I literally had someone’s plate pressed into my back because they were standing so close behind me in the queue!

If you have Half Board Plus, you get the option of having breakfast and dinner in the Italian restaurant, and this is 10,000% worth it. We would definitely recommend booking the Italian if you would rather avoid the chaos of the buffet at dinner time.

Drinks / Half Board Plus

One of our biggest considerations when deciding whether we’d return is the drinks situation.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t book All Inclusive at this hotel and our option was Half Board Premium with Unique. Although the initial holiday price seems reasonable for a 12-night stay, you are spending considerably more once you add drinks and bottled water throughout the day.

We took this for granted on previous All Inclusive holidays, where you don’t think twice about getting a drink whenever you want one. Here, the additional costs really do add up.

For us, this is probably one of the main reasons we wouldn’t return, as the overall cost ended up being considerably more than the initial booking price.

Is Unique worth it?

This is a difficult one.

With Unique, you get access to the Unique pool and the VIP lounge, as well as the quieter jacuzzi terrace. Personally, I wouldn’t say the VIP lounge was anything particularly special. We only went in twice for sandwiches and unfortunately weren’t overly impressed with the food. There are drinks available, but the selection is fairly limited, so for us the VIP lounge wasn’t really worth the upgrade.

For us, the quieter jacuzzi terrace and Unique pool were the main benefits.

One particular member of staff around the Unique pool also deserves a huge mention. He worked incredibly hard throughout the day to make sure everyone had drinks and stayed hydrated. He was constantly on the go and was genuinely brilliant — friendly, attentive and clearly working extremely hard. He really made a difference to our experience around the pool.

Evening entertainment

The evening entertainment itself is great and you can see a lot of effort goes into putting it on.

However, the atmosphere and layout aren’t ideal. There simply doesn’t seem to be enough space for the number of people wanting to watch. If you don’t get there at the right time, you can end up standing and blocking other people’s views, which makes it difficult for everyone to enjoy.

The people / atmosphere

This is obviously very subjective, but we did find that some of the other guests could come across as quite rude and unfriendly during our stay.

Considering this is a family-friendly hotel, it wasn’t quite the atmosphere we expected. This isn’t something the hotel can control, of course, but it did affect our experience at times.

The good

Cleanliness

The hotel is exceptionally clean.

Considering the sheer number of people staying there, the groundsmen work incredibly hard to keep everything spotless and the gardens looking beautiful. The resort is huge, yet everything is so well maintained.

Housekeeping

Our housekeeping team were absolutely wonderful. They were friendly, efficient and couldn’t be faulted.

Our room was cleaned twice a day, we constantly had fresh towels and we even had little chocolates left out for us in the evening. These small touches really did make the stay feel special.

The Italian restaurant

A special mention absolutely has to go to the staff in the Italian restaurant.

They were amazing from start to finish. They worked incredibly hard, were always friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We often had the same servers and they would remember us each time we came in, which made the service feel really personal.

This was exactly the level of service you would expect from a 5-star hotel and they really deserve recognition.

Check-in and check-out

We checked in just before midnight and the night reception staff were lovely and incredibly welcoming. We even had a selection of cold food waiting for us in our room, which was a really thoughtful touch after travelling so late.

Our flight home wasn’t until late evening, so we enquired about a late check-out. Unfortunately, there wasn’t an option available to us. I assume this is something that needs to be booked well in advance.

There is a communal bathroom available for guests to use before travelling home, along with lockers so you don’t have to carry your hand luggage around all day, which is useful.

However, when we asked reception about the late check-out, we unfortunately found the staff member we spoke to quite unhelpful and, if I’m honest, quite rude. I appreciate reception staff must get asked the same questions repeatedly, especially with the sheer number of guests, but a friendlier approach would have been appreciated.

I didn’t pursue the late check-out any further because of the attitude we received.

Location & things to do

The location is fantastic for getting out and exploring Gran Canaria.

We did a boat trip to see the dolphins — and there were loads! We even saw a whole family jumping out of the water, which was amazing.

We also did a local buggy ride through the mountains. We booked both experiences through GetYourGuide and would definitely recommend getting out of the resort and seeing more of the island.

The beaches around the sand dunes are beautiful too. They are a bit of a walk from the hotel, but definitely worth it.

Overall

We genuinely did have a lovely 12-night holiday and there is no denying that the Lopesan Costa Meloneras is a stunning resort.

The cleanliness, beautiful grounds, housekeeping and the service we received from certain staff members were all fantastic. The Italian restaurant in particular was a highlight for us.

However, I think it’s important to be realistic about what you’re booking.

If you’re looking for a lively family resort with lots going on, plenty of pools, entertainment and activities, this could be a fantastic choice.

But if you’re looking for a quiet couples’ getaway, this probably wouldn’t be our first choice. The sheer number of guests means the pools, buffet and entertainment areas can feel very busy, and the battle for sun loungers isn’t particularly relaxing.

For us personally, the fact that we couldn’t book All Inclusive, combined with the additional cost of drinks and water throughout a 12-night stay, would probably mean we wouldn’t return. The overall cost ended up being considerably more than we anticipated.

Would we recommend it? Yes — but with reservations.

It’s a beautiful hotel with some genuinely fantastic staff, but I would definitely read the reviews carefully and consider what type of holiday you’re looking for before booking. For families, it could be brilliant. For couples wanting a peaceful, relaxing break, there may be better options.

Would visit again

We had an excellent stay at the Lopesan and would definitely consider returning to this hotel or another Lopesan property. The hotel is gorgeous, with a fabulous lobby and infinity pool. The Toscana restaurant was good and had some gluten-free options available.Unfortunately, the pool bars were a let-down when it came to gluten-free dining. One issue I frequently encountered was that staff often did not know which items on the menu were gluten-free. At times, they were quite blunt and would simply say they didn't know, rather than trying to find out. As someone with Coeliac disease, this made ordering food difficult and sometimes risky, as I was left having to make my best guess or go without. On several occasions, I ended up choosing a salad just to be safe. The hotel would benefit from offering more gluten-free options, such as burgers with gluten-free buns, hot dogs, cakes, and other snacks. That said, I presumed the prawn cocktail nachos were gluten-free, and they were very nice.We stayed on a bed-and-breakfast basis only. The breakfast options were amazing for my partner, who does not have any dietary requirements. For me, there were the usual options such as bacon, eggs, beans, fruit, yoghurt, and honey. The lady who made the fresh omelettes was excellent. However, it would be nice to see a greater variety of gluten-free cereals, breads, bread rolls, and cakes. The area is quite pricey, but there is a lovely variety of shops right outside the hotel, as well as a Starbucks. The location was excellent, right next to the sea.Another major positive was the bus station directly across the road from the hotel. It was incredibly convenient and allowed us to travel around the island at a very reasonable cost, saving us from having to pay for taxis. We used the buses to visit Playa del Inglés, Mogán, and Palmitos Park, and found the service reliable and easy to use. There are also some good dining options nearby. We particularly enjoyed Sawadee, a Thai restaurant just across the road, which offered gluten-free options and gave me some additional choice outside of the hotel. One issue I had was with the Lopesan app. I saw a menu for KUBUKI and made a reservation because the gluten-free options appeared to be quite good. However, upon arrival, we were told that the menu on the app was two years out of date and inaccurate. In reality, there were very few gluten-free options available, so we decided to leave and find somewhere else to eat.Overall, we had a great time and loved the pools, scenery, and overall experience. The staff were friendly, particularly Eduardo on the main reception desk, who was very helpful. Despite the issues with gluten-free dining and the outdated restaurant information on the app, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return.

Wouldn’t return to this one

I read a recent review of this hotel describing it as “fur coat and no knickers” which is exactly how I would describe it. We have stayed in maspalomas/melonares at several different hotels now, we always fancied the Lopesan Costa Melonares as it the entrance is very grand. We stayed in August for 14 nights, two rooms, breakfast only as we like to dine/drink out on an evening. Good bits - The grounds are beautiful and wry well kept, gold star for the gardeners, The pools are fantastic. The housekeepers who looked after 5205 and 5207 fantastic and very friendly. The breakfast food was a great selection and always hot. Bad bits - The loungers are rubbish for a “5 star” hotel, basic with no cushions (the Riu Palace has nice foam mattresses on all loungers), the pool staff are supposed to remove towels from loungers if unattended before 10am, we had breakfast around 8 most morning and all the premium positions had already been secured, we would stay on out loungers for the day from that point, the staff did not remove any in the 12 days we had loungers on site. On a few occasions well after the 10am reservation ban we went to the pool bar or into the pool and came back to have the “no reservation” notes on our loungers which enraged us.

The staff at the pool bar next to the lazy river are terrible, service is very slow and they seem to prefer chatting amongst themselves over waiting tables, we had to ask for service several times which is unacceptable.

The circular infinity pool overlooking the lighthouse shown on brochures is only for “unique customers”.

The entertainment area doesn’t seem to have many seats but this didn’t bother us as we only passed through going out for the evening.

Rooms are dated, very basic kettle in room but the coffee/milk etc not replenished,

Overall we are very disappointed, the Riu Palace 100 or so meters away has nice and more modern rooms, all facilities available without paying extra, better loungers, a lot better pool bar service.

We are booked to stay at the Lopesan Boab late October and hoping it’s a lot better service.

Overall disappointed, was a great holiday but the hotel left us dissapointed after paying a premium price.

Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort - Amazing hotel all round!

Amazing hotel - the only issue we had was the queue and rudeness of other customers pushing and shoving at mealtimes!

The hotel itself is immaculate - there are so many pools and they are so big that the resort never felt too crowded (except at mealtimes). Infinity pool and lazy river - just amazing!!!! Loved by the whole family from 3 to 70!

Beautiful surroundings, great location. We hired a car but really shouldn't have bothered. The atmosphere was calm despite this being a family hotel. It was a bit on the pricey side but you do get what you pay for. We didn't experience any noise - we were at the rear of the hotel so away from this and we had accessible rooms which were perfect for us. Plenty of amenities - so much to do and see and it felt like paradise for the whole week we were there except for the incident below!

We only experienced one negative issue during our stay and that was when an increadibly heavy dining table collapsed onto my disabled daughter's legs. She screamed in pain and although staff saw it, none of them, nor customers, came to her aid. I was infuriated as she was alone with my young granddaughter at the time. Eventually the restaurant manager came to her aid. I was appalled at the lack of help received but this was the only negative I have to say,

Staff generally were friendly although there one or two who did appear to be happy with their jobs or possibly dealing with customers.

Great access to the whole site for people with mobility issues - wheelchair access is perfect!

Free parking if you have proof of disability.

Spa facilities are to very accessible in certain areas but we managed. Staff were very supportive and the spa, if you can go, is amazing for 40 Euros for a 5 hour slot!

All in all, this is one of the best holidays we have had.
