- Melia Fuerteventura Hotel

This superb beach hotel enjoys a central location in the south of the inviting island of Fuerteventura. The hotel is situated directly next to the beach of the vibrant tourist hub of Playa Barca. The town centre of Costa Calma is situated a mere 4 kms from the hotel while the airport and the island's capital city are just 80 kms away. This sleek unassuming hotel lies hidden amidst swaying palms, blending effortlessly with its spectacular surroundings. The setting offers guests a luxurious retreat and an oasis of calmness and seclusion in which to relax and unwind surrounded by golden sands fringing the turquoise waters of the sea. The hotel interiors boast a striking contemporary style with neutral and earthy tones and lavish furnishings. The hotel affords guests an array of first-class facilities which are sure to surpass the expectations of even the most discerning traveller.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
We are staying at the hotel presently but I wanted to write now as I don’t want others to make the same mistake as us and waste their summer holiday here. I very rarely write reviews but am compelled to do so in this instance.
Do not book this hotel - if you have booked and still have time to cancel please do and go elsewhere!!!
The hotel has a huge staffing issue in terms of quantity of staff and the training of the ones who are here. It is not the general staff’s fault - but it is the fault of management who are aware this is the case but still happy to take bookings from guests who are expecting 5* service. I would genuinely say it’s closer to 3*. Just a few of our issues so far below:
Our room was booked for 2 adults/2 kids. We arrive at the hotel just before midnight so very tired. The sofa bed in the room which will accommodate 2 kids is not pulled out / made up. No problem, we request bedding from the guy who delivers the luggage. None comes. I ring reception, they promise it will come shortly. It never arrives. I let my kids sleep in the big bed with my husband and I sleep on a sofa bed with not even a sheet on. I had to request the bedding twice again the next day before it came. This is an ongoing problem - you have to ask for everything 3/4/5 times before you eventually get it.
Food/drink service is dire, we’ve had to have a meal in any of the restaurants / bars where it’s taken less than 30- 45 minutes to arrive & where we’ve had all the items we ordered. I am not exaggerating!
The Italian restaurant is closed - no explanation, no compensation.
The summer pool bar by the kids pool area is not staffed and only has water, juice and sweets, the coffee machine does not work, there are no ice creams or soft drinks or (god forbid on an AI holiday) alcoholic options available. If you want anything other than water and sweets during the day you have to walk out of the kids area to The Shack, where the queue to the bar is never less than 8 people deep with one barman working. To not be able to easily get a coffee or a Coca-Cola at a 5* all inclusive resort during the day is frankly bizarre.
Another thing I would expect to be easily accessible and plentiful in an all inclusive resort is ice cream. I have 3 kids under 10 so obviously this is important on holiday! In terms of fully stocked all I genuinely expect is chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. For the majority of our time here all there has been is nougat and lemon sorbet! It’s also only open for 4 out of 24 hours everyday.
I honestly could go on and on with why this hotel is not 5 or to be honest even 4*. Please don’t waste your money and more importantly your pressure holiday time with your kids here. As I say I’m not a moaner and rarely review but felt compelled to as it’s been so awful. Frankly can’t believe we have another week to go and just wish we could move. So disappointed and upset.
Also to add, my husband has reported all these issues yesterday afternoon and we’ve had no response from management yet. Apparently not a priority.
It’s a huge shame that my holiday was ruined by the hotels policies on children. I came to the hotel because it’s a great kitesurfing location and thought it would be a great place to bring the family whilst I could do some kitesurfing. However there is nothing for children under 16 to do. They are not allowed to have any floatation device in pools or throw a ball. There are no activities for them to do. They are not allowed in some of the restaurants. To be honest the policies have ruined our holiday so I couldn’t recommend it to anyone with a family with children under 16.
Dede helped me with basketball and taught me new celebrations ⭐️ ! Great personal.
Lovely hotel, but certainly not up to our usual 5 star expectations.
Positives - Views were beautiful Friendly staff, bar 1 Rooms were clean & spacious Big drink selection, named brand cocktails, flavoured iced coffees etc Liked being able to scan the QR code for menus 24 hour bar that also served food Sun beds always available The lunchtime restaurant Kanna was a nice setting outside - that served steak/calamari etc all afternoon
Negatives - FOOD, specially at dinner times we struggled! It’s a place that does everything, but not well! Many options, different meat, fish, even a smaller kids section with burger, hot dogs, fried chicken etc BUT when struggling for main meals that were enjoyable, we assumed worst case that there’s the pasta, burgers and chips for the week …wrong! I’m unsure how you get those things so wrong. Many items were questionable whether fully cooked or not also. My son got a boiled egg & when cracked open the egg was completely raw. Most nights we left hungry & went up to the 24 hour bar for bowls of nachos!
Not much evening entertainment. The World Cup was on but that’s it - other than a dry ‘circus’ that consisted mostly of bubbles. The only one decent evening was a group of singers, on our last evening. However, very short!
We still had a lovely time, but overall it’s definitely not a 5star & wouldn’t come back mostly due to food.
I could not recommend this hotel highly enough. We upgraded to Reserve when we arrived, it’s worth every penny. The reserve pool is lovely and peaceful, the sunloungers are really comfy. The bar serves anything you can think of.
Restaurants
We went to the Italian a couple of times, the food was lovely, varied. Pizzas were exceptional. Lemon Fish was not for us, I’m not a fish eater, there were other choices of meat dumplings, just not to my taste
Kanna was lovely, the staff were very attentive, however for lunchtime, the portions were huge.
The shack - we went here most lunchtimes, your typical burgers, wraps etc. again the food was superb, they just need to employ more staff, currently they are worked off their feet!
The buffet was lovely for breakfast and dinner, plenty of choice for everyone, no complaints here.
The hotel is remote, we got a taxi to Costa calma, but there is very little there for shopping etc, apparently Jandia would be a better option.
Our room was in the 8th floor with stunning views of the pool and beach. Stunning!
The rooms were a gem, large, airy, clean and peaceful.
I do have a little gripe, of no fault of the hotel, guests, please remove your rubbish from the pool area and put your own towels in the laundry bin provided, the amazing staff are not your butler/slave!
I would come back to this hotel, please ignore the negative comments, it is 5* and the staff make it that way!
