Atlantic Garden Beach Mate

We had a brilliant week at Atlantic Garden. I emailed them the morning we were arriving to ask for extra bedding as we knew we needed the sofa bed as our flight didn’t arrive in until 7pm, we got to the apartment and the sofa bed was already made up for us 🥰 The apartment had everything we needed; induction hob, fridge, kettle toaster and microwave. As it is gated it felt really safe for our two children 10 & 6 who loved going from the pool to the playground throughout the day. The proximity to the beautiful shopping centre and beach really made it for us. We will definitely return!

The resort was quiet and always plenty of sun beds. Many of the apartments have sun beds on their balcony and people used those. Gardens were nicely kept and the pool water attended to a few times a week. A cleaner moped round it half heartedly. There was a pool guard daily. But only the bar was open, (6 days a week). The apartments above it got all the noise. The Gym was closed, restaurant closed and the space now full of the cleaner/caretakers junk which we had to walk past to get to our room. No reception, all entries are by keysafe. The resort had no energy, no life about it. It’s had its day. It’s very close to El Campanario shopping area, plenty shops, restaurants and bars, supermarket and local market twice a week.

Unfortunately, our family holiday at Atlantic Garden Beach Mate became extremely disappointing.

The whole complex feels very tired and run down and was not what we expected from the photos. When we arrived, only one of the two large swimming pools was available for the first three days.

We also had concerns about the security of our apartment door, with the internal safety lock not working properly. We reported this but were effectively told that the doors were all the same, which was hardly reassuring when staying with children.

However, by far the biggest problem was the cockroaches. This wasn't a case of seeing one occasional insect. We repeatedly found cockroaches throughout the kitchen and underneath the beds, despite doing our best to keep the apartment clean every day.

It reached the point where our children were terrified and we barely slept because we were worried about cockroaches crawling around the apartment at night. We no longer felt comfortable preparing or storing food in the kitchen and ended up eating out more than planned.

We reported the problem urgently and asked for help. The solution offered was essentially cockroach spray for us to use ourselves. We asked for a proper solution or alternative accommodation, but none was provided.

Eventually, we simply couldn't face putting our children through another night there. After receiving no adequate solution, out of desperation we booked an Airbnb ourselves and left, at considerable additional expense. In 39 years, this is certainly a first for me and something I never want to experience again on holiday.

We were told that the complex is fumigated monthly, which concerned us given what we were experiencing. After checking other reviews, we also found previous guests reporting problems with cockroaches. Had we appreciated the extent of this before travelling, we would not have booked.

I also found management quite rude on occasions and, most disappointingly, unwilling to provide meaningful help when our family was desperate for a solution.

We understand that insects can occur in warm climates, but repeatedly finding cockroaches throughout the kitchen and underneath the beds of family accommodation is not something we consider acceptable.

Having to abandon accommodation we'd already paid for and pay for emergency accommodation ourselves was an awful way for our family holiday to end.
