Antigua

Costa Antigua is a quaint resort in the centre of Fuerteventura offering many quiet tree-lined streets set against a backdrop of the hills. Its location is a convenient base from which to explore the sights of the island.

When to go

The Canary Islands have relatively warm weather all year round, although summer months tend to be hottest with temperatures averaging 25℃. The winter months still reach the high-teens, and, beause there’s very little rainfall year-round, it’s the perfect getaway any time.

Top attractions

Costa Antigua is one of the most important towns in Fuerteventura and is home to major archaeological sites including:

• Correlates
• Alalajita
• Rosita del Vicario

It also has interesting examples of architecture all through the resort including old corn mills. It’s also close to a golf course, a shopping complex, restaurants, a cinema (showing films in Spanish) and a bowling alley.

Beaches

The beaches of Antigua are located on the east coast, and the main ones worth visiting are:

Caleta de Fuste - The main beach, popular with families due to the long stretch of golden sand. Sunbeds are available to hire, and the sea is calm and perfect for swimming in.

La Guirra Beach - A man-made lagoon with golden sand just 2 kilometres south of Caleta De Fuste

Salinas del Carmen & El Muellito - A quiet stretch of sand, perfect for relaxing. Pozo Negro - A 300m long black sand beach is off the beaten path and is therefore one of the least busy beaches in Antigua.

Dining

There is only a small selection of eateries in Costa Antigua as it is mainly a residential area. Visit Caleta de Fuste for a wider variety of restaurants with local dishes galore, including a traditional goat stew or papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes).

Be sure to book in at Volvoreta to sample some of the best cocktails and meat platters in Antigua!

Entertainment

Costa Antigua is a low-key resort with just a scattering of bars. Visit the Crazy Goat Bar for karaoke or Benny’s Bar for a laid-back night of eating pizza and watching sports. Visit Costa Caleta for a more exciting night out with endless bars, restaurants and discos.

Adventure and Sports

Take a coastal walk to Caleta on a route populated by chipmunks to feed. The well-lit path makes it an excellent route to watch the sunsets from, too On the beaches of Antigua, you’ll find the usual watersports such as jet skis, scuba diving and snorkelling as well as boat trips and a submarine offering undersea excursions.

Getting around

Bus services are available all-around Fuerteventura and can take you anywhere on the island. Taxis are also available, but they can’t be booked in advance so be prepared to flag one down.

The road links in Fuerteventura are of high quality, although some of the islands are more tracks than tarmac. Trains aren’t really a thing in Fuerteventura, but camel rides can still be found on the island.
