Mijas Costa

Mijas can be found on the southern coast of Spain, on the Costa del Sol. The centre, known as Mijas Costa, borders Fuengirola and makes up the main commercial area of the region. Down the coastline and a little west is La Cala de Mijas, a small resort with a few hotels. Inland, Mijas Pueblo has a more traditional vibe shown through the whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs that are typical of Andalucia.

When to go

The Costa del Sol offers up to 320 days of bright sunshine annually with a mean temperature of 18℃. Peak temperatures in high season (June to September) reach the high-20s daily. The cool breeze of the Mediterranean coastline takes the edge off the high temperatures, making Mijas perfect for a beach holiday.

Top Attractions

Every Wednesday and Saturday in La Cala de Mijas there is a street market with fresh food and plants, ceramics and crafts.

Also worth a visit are Mijas Pueblo, a village with steep winding streets that’s home to many little churches and gift shop and Castillo de Colomares, a fairytale castle built in the 15th century by doctor Esteban Martin.

To see the village from a different vantage point, check out The Chapel of the Port and if you’d like to see a more ethical zoo with large enclosures, visit Bioparc Fuengirola. It is even open until 1AM in the summer months so you can see nocturnal animals!

Beaches

For less populated and rockier beaches, visit La Cala de Mijas and Riviera del Sol-Miraflores.

Calahonda, a popular resort located halfway between Marbella and Fuengirola, has a sand and pebble beach with many chiringuitos (beach restaurants) to choose from. Just along from here is Cabopino beach, famous for its natural sand dunes. For a more traditional beach experience, visit Los Boliches-Gariolas in Mijas Pueblo for sun loungers and palm trees galore.

Culture

Mijas Costa is a modern resort that lacks in Andalucian history and culture but makes up for it in family entertainment. For a bit of culture, pop over to nearby resorts such as Mijas Pueblo, Fuengirola or Marbella.

Dining

There are many restaurants to choose from in Mijas, all with the Andalucian sociability the region is known for.

For authentic Spanish food try El Mirlo Blanco. It’s perfect to sit on the terrace in summer.

For the best fish, try Bar de Marineros in Fuengirola. It’s regularly visited by locals so you know it’s good.

Alberts in the Port is a perfect spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner if not just for the food but the view as well.

Entertainment

During the summer months, the promenade of La Cala de Mijas becomes a venue for flamenco dancing and classical music shows.

The Hipodromo Racecourse is perfect for a fun night out where you can see live races and entertainment all in one venue.

Bar life is never ending for those who enjoy late nights. From tapas bars to karaoke bars, to Irish pubs and nightclubs, Mijas Costa isn’t short of a good night out venue.

Adventure and Sports

Mijas is home to seven golf courses with more under construction. Most notably, it is home to the La Cala Resort, the most significant golf resort in Spain. Riviera del Sol-Miraflores is home to another golf and bowling club as well as its own beach that non-members can enjoy. The beaches in Mijas Costa offer a range of water sports including:

It is recommended to rent a car while staying in Mijas Costa, that way travelling to other towns and resorts is easy.
