Location good , rooms are spacious and has air conditioning . Had a good variety of restaurants. And great value for Money Sun beds were on different levels but lifts to get to them easily. Buses to get into Funchal only €2 , can also enjoy the lovely walk into Funchal passing some great restaurants and shops on the way .

We love this hotel. Great staff, beautiful rooms and a wonderful sea water pool. Great to be able to swim in the ocean this time with the favourable tide and weather. Food and drink offer is also very good and with our Gold prestige discount works well for us. Thoroughly recommend this hotel.
A wonderful 5 star hotel experience from beginning to end. The location is brilliant and although up on the Cliff 30 mins out of Funchal, it is a lovely walk, if you like walking, or there are taxis outside the hotel doors and plenty of buses on the main road outside the hotel. Our room was just as it appears on the hotel advertising and it was well maintained and very clean; the balcony was brilliant especially at night watching the ocean, stars and the occasional Petrels at 11.00pm. There are plenty of sunbeds and plenty of areas to sunbathe to suit different choices; the seawater pool on the sunbathing area by the sea is wonderful and you could stay in it all day it's so relaxing. The service and food in the Rose Garden was amazing and really made our stay exceptional; so much so that we returned home and booked to go again next year. We booked Half Board and the breakfast was fantastic, but the three course meal and service in the evening was well beyond our expectations and every evening had a variety of choices all absolutely delicious :).
I wrote already one appreciation on this hotel, and I do another one with great pleasure. What is unique, is the consistent quality of this hotel. Of course one would not expect anything else from a 5 star, but more than once was I not satisfied with my choice.
Keeping up the quality is a «people’s » business. In this hotel the staff truly makes the difference. The staff at the front door, the reception, the maintenance people, the waiters, the cooks, the staff of the bars and the fitness centre are all taking their job serious in a very friendly manner.
Consistent quality also is the upkeep of the buildings, the garden and swimming pools.
Most hotels (even 5 stars) consider restaurants as an « afterthought ». You can have a nice meal perhaps but not a culinary experience. CLIFF BAY offers something different; CLIFF BAY makes restaurants their centrepiece of the wellness and relaxation of the clients.
There are 5 different restaurants. The BLUE LAGOON is a pool side restaurant with very cosy seating arrangements in a relaxed ambiance. You will find some internationally known food as well as local dishes with fresh fish and excellent meat. THE ROSE GARDEN is a restaurant with a more » formal » setting such as nicer tables and cosy corners surrounded by luxurious plantations. The menu is broader and choices are varied. The good ambiance is « felt », and the evenings are enlightened by life music. ALVISTA MIDITERANIAN is for say, “more romantic” people with a culinary « fit ». The setting is fantastic with a terrace that opens to the ocean. Smooth soft illumination in a « park style » setting. The menu is of a different level with some higher priced dishes, but always affordable. ALVISTA ASIA is a true culinary discovery of yet a different level. The menu is based on a more, what I would call, transitional approach. Traditional dishes are re-invented and transformed into fine “Asian” dining. I wrote a separate appreciation for this restaurant in which I try to translate my personal reaction to this renewed discovery. Il GALLO d’Oro is a 2-star Michelin restaurant. I did not yet find the opportunity to go there (except for the breakfast which is wonderful). One reason is that I cannot go through a 6 or 8-cours experience with all the wine that goes with it. Another reason is that I wanted to first try out all the other restaurants. I have no doubt that this restaurant meets the highest expectations. I will perhaps be able to negotiate a 3-course menu one day.
My wife and I tried three different rooms at three separate times. All rooms are worth the money. Nice size bedrooms and bathrooms. All rooms have a balcony with either sea view, garden view, or the bay of FUNCHAL view. The hotel is calm and I have not noticed any noise at night. There is ample place for everybody in the beautiful surrounding gardens and pools as well as many little spots where you can relax.
If you are looking for a “true” 5-star experience, I believe that I do not exaggerate by recommending this hotel if you go to FUNCHAL, MADEIRA
