Quinta Penha de Franca

The hotel is a perfect location for visiting Funchal. Located just a short walk from the ferry port. The hotel is a very traditional building set within beautiful grounds, it has a large lounge area in the reception, a bar, restaurant and pool with plenty of sunbeds that was never busy. Ans also a billiards room. There are plenty of eating and drinking places surrounding it. We stayed in room 11 in the Manor House. There are no lifts in this building but a member of staff brought our cases up to our room which was on the top floor. The room itself was very traditionally decorated but clean with carpet on the floor which we liked. There was no balcony or terrace, which we hadn’t taken into account when we booked, otherwise we would have booked a more upgraded room as we only booked economy. The bed was a little too firm for our liking and we were supplied feather pillows which we also did not like, but it was only a weeks stay. There was a mini fridge in the room which had a price list attached which was reasonably priced should you choose to purchase the items within. There was also a coffee machine and tea and coffee was supplied. Unfortunately there was a lack of power sockets we only found one on the wall behind the bed which had an extension lead in which had 3 ports of which one was used for the fridge, luckily we always carry a 4 way extension lead which helped on this occasion. There was a small tv on the wall and a hairdryer in the bathroom. The rooms were attended to daily with fresh towels provided.

The breakfast area has inside and outside seating which was lovely on a morning to sit out and enjoy the view of the garden. Breakfast itself was plentiful with a choice of hot and cold options, the freshly baked bread and pastries every morning were amazing.

You can also use the facilities of the sister hotel which is accessed by a small footbridge at the back of the property which we found good for getting down to the sea front as it saves walking up and down the steep roads surrounding the hotel. We would return but would choose a different room preferably with balcony or terrace.

Stayed in one of three junior suites that are above the restaurant at lower site . The restaurant which has a large terrace also caters for private functions , this leads to excessive noise people a music till at least midnight , so if you want chilled evenings spent on the balcony for your entire stay do NOT book junior suites .
