Had a great stay at the Porto Mare. It’s a little out of Funchal but an easy bus or taxi ride away. We stayed half board. The food was plentiful with lots of choice - you’d have to be a fussy eater if you couldn’t find anything you liked. Bed was really comfy and the air-con worked really well. I used the gym and there was enough equipment to have a good workout. Was never busy. Lots of sun loungers around the grounds so could always find a sunbed, though the Brits were up to their usual antics of reserving beds very early in the morning to be sat right next to the pool. As a Brit myself, I find it embarrassing that people still do this even though the signs clearly tell you not to reserve beds. Madeira has so much to offer so I’d advise leaving the poolside for a couple of days or more and visiting what this beautiful island has to offer. We enjoyed a tour of the West, the East and up to the North and my highlight was seeing dolphins on the Magic Dolphin Celebrity cruise. Just wow. So the hotel is great and I would stay there again, but I would also advise seeing at much of the island as possible.
Great location and the grounds are very impressive. The hotel always felt calm and quiet. Spotlessly clean and very pleasant staff.
We all really enjoyed our stay. All the hotel staff that we dealt with were friendly and efficient. Will definitely be going back.
We thought this hotel was excellent.
Positives :
We had a superior sea view room which was a very large room with a huge bed.
The hotel gardens are beautiful
The breakfast buffet food was very good
We also ate at the Il Basilico restaurant twice which was excellent, and had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing in the Alfama restaurant which we also really enjoyed
The hotel is within walking distance from Funchal town centre (30+ mins), but we also got a bus a couple of times
The evening entertainment was excellent, especially the summer schedule at the Varanda bar
Minor negatives : We thought the air conditioning in the room was quite noisy The Horta restaurant just wasn't to my liking (personal choice) We found it a bit confusing getting fhrough the connecting hotels to the various restauarnts. It's easier to find your way across the pool area and then get a lift if necessary
Overall we really liked this hotel, and we intend to go back next year to enjoy more time at the hotel and to see more of the island
Porto Mare is an extraordinary hotel that I will return to. Aside from minor issues regarding the attitude of some staff members, it is otherwise a perfect 10.
