Just two minutes from Funchal's largest beach, Formosa Beach, lies Pestana Royal, an All-Inclusive only hotel which offers amazing views of the Cabo Girao hillside, and is just 10 minutes from Funchal city centre. The hotel offers transportation to Funchal city, courtesy of the hotels (subject days and time table schedules as per units program, “first come, first served” basis).
During your stay, you can lounge by the two swimming pools that the hotel has to offer as well as a Solarium. The children can enjoy their time at the hotel's kids club or in the playground, whereas there are plenty of activities for the adults to partake in such as Pool, Mini Golf or Tennis. There are four restaurants to spend your evening meal, three being a set menu and one open buffet.
Each room is equipped with a television, safe, free Wi-Fi, a bath and hairdryer. For a small supplement will guarantee a balcony which offers panoramic views of the hotel's surroundings. Seaview rooms are also available at a supplement charge.

My overall view is that you get what you pay for and on that basis the hotel is good value. Trying to give a balanced account of our stay we would say although the hotel advertises itself as five star, it’s not, unless the scale is 1-8.
Expectations of five star need to be managed down, but the price reflects that and we overall we enjoyed our stay. The buffet is good, however the other two restaurants can only be booked once during a 9 day stay. At best they are ok, the buffet is better.
The restaurant and bar staff were extremely attentive and the all inclusive works very well. There is no stinting on alcoholic or other drinks which are topped up very quickly and repeatedly. The choice of cocktails is too numerous to mention.
The hotel facilities such as pool, Gym, tennis court were good.
The hotel is well placed to get into Funchal via the bus ( number 1 or 2 at 2.05 euros) from outside the hotel and there is a shuttle bus twice a day intoFunchal free from the hotel. Our experience of trying to get an Uber was poor as one never came, however reception will get a taxi for you and the cost to Funchal is around €15 one way.
The downside to the hotel for us was the room. We had booked a deluxe Seaview room. The room was small which is not a problem and had a great sea view, however the carpet was stained and the fixtures and fittings were more 3 star than 5. The fridge balanced precariously on top of the safe on top of a small chest of drawers, in a melanin wardrobe!
The hotel is amazing, with very polite, friendly and lovely staff who make you feel really welcome. There is a great selection of food, including lots of fresh salads and fruit.
We travelled with our toddler and found it very family-friendly, with plenty to do and a playground to enjoy. The beach is easy to access, and getting around is simple with buses and Bolt available if needed. There is also a nice supermarket just opposite the hotel, which was very convenient. Some of the food and room quality can be a little hit and miss at times, but overall everything is very clean, tidy and well looked after. We had a lovely stay and really enjoyed the relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Great place and great location. The hotel itself could do with a bit of a makeover but it was generally of good decor. The staff are extremely hard working and nothing is to much for them to make sure your stay is how you would like it. We booked the additional restaurant twice in our 10 day stay and went both times to the Italian as being a vegetarian this had better options. The buffet itself has many options for meat and fish but limited for vegetarians however the staff are happy to accommodate and I definitely didnt go hungry. There is a well stocked shop over the road from the hotel and on a review prior to coming we brought our own coffee as the tea and coffee doesn't get topped up in room but there is many drinks available at the many bars including hot drinks. We upgraded our room from basic to sea view balcony room following reviews on trip advisor and would highly recommend people do the same if looking to go to this hotel as the sea air from the balcony was a god send at times. The whole relaxed feel of the hotel made the whole stay a relaxed one, the sunsets from the bar are definitely worth a watch as are breathtaking. The lift down to the beach is great and the walks alone the promenade are a must. A great place as a base to explore Funchal and the neighbouring areas without being in the hub of the city. Also advise getting Uber's we did everywhere with ease. We will be coming back to Madeira and this hotel thanks again for a wonderful holiday.

Beautiful location, great pools, lovely gardens and a really relaxed holiday atmosphere. Our room was clean, comfortable and well maintained, with plenty of choice when it came to food and drinks.
A special mention to Diana from the entertainment team, who was so friendly and welcoming, along with all the staff who made us feel so well looked after.
Madeira is absolutely stunning, and the Pestana Royal was the perfect base for exploring the island and relaxing afterwards.

As a couple in our early 70s we enjoyed our stay at this pleasant, relaxing hotel. It is set in beautiful gardens and in a good location with fantastic coastal views. There is a beautiful promenade walk to the village of Camara DeLobos, and about 15 by minutes bus ride to Funchal,( free shuttle bus or local bus). The hotel is clean. You do not get the same chamber maid each day and the standard varied. Some days items put for exchange were not replaced. Margaret was particularly helpful, ensuring we had everything. To exchange pool towels you leave them in your room , so it is advisable to take some of your own as they may not be exchanged till late afternoon. Our suite was beautiful. There was a wide range of dishes on offer. The Madeiran Night in the gardens was excellent. This is a very green hotel. Thank you for a lovely holiday.
