Nice hotel
We had a week at this hotel and thought it was a beautiful hotel .it had two large outdoor pools and one indoor pool and jacuzzi on two different levels .it also has a hairdressers and spa.i used both and they were great.The breakfast was amazing from cereals, cooked breakfast , rolls , juices , fresh fruit , yogurts, patties ,various teas/coffee and they served brekky up to 11am.We had a beautiful pool facing room with a large balcony. And comfy wicker chairs and stools perfect to chill on after the pool.The room was extremely comfortable, bed had a great mattress, had a big bathroom (toilet, bidet, bath/shower attachment, toiletries). The room was kept very clean by the friendly cleaners daily and they left lots tea /coffee , water and Pepsi in the fridge.There were a few restaurants and bars close to the hotel or you had a 20 min downhill walk into Funchal town/marina (get a bolt taxi back for approx 7 euro).all staff were lovely including porters, receptionists , pool attendants ,apart from the early morning bird handler …one occasion his eagle had flown onto a balcony so a number of us simply stood to watch to see if the bird would come down and he abruptly told us “go away and let me do my job” .he clearly needs some training on how to talk to people staying at the hotel as obviously people see a bird handler and propose taking photos. (I have included a picture of him).The only other issue was the jacuzzi had a sign that only people over 14 yrs could use the jacuzzi and when I proposed visiting it there was a couple in there with three noisy children approx 3/6 years.a Pestana staff man saw them in the jacuzzi but didn’t remind them it was over 14 years , hence why we didn’t bother using a noisy jacuzzi.shame as adults could have enjoyed some quiet time. the ground floor also has sea access perfect for those who enjoy a snorkel or for those who like to watch birds visit the small boulder beach (note:u cannot go on the boulder beach). it also faces the grand Reids hotel where Winston Churchill stayed. If u dig deep in yr pockets u can stay there for approx £800 a night.there were always lots of sunbeds and every visitor acted respectable by not leaving towels on sunbeds at stupid times (which in any event would be removed (rightly so) if left unattended for a short period of time.It had a weekly summer night party buffet for 55 euros (we didn’t go but watched some of it from our balcony) which consisted of one couple dancing to various tracts ….in the pool restaurant……bit steep price for what was provided).The touts outside the hotels trying to drag u on a three hr walk around the hotel to join their points system /sort of time share was annoying but a firm No usually sent them on their way. Overall this was a beautiful hotel with some minor issues that didn’t impact on a wonderful holiday (we stayed also at their sister hotel in camaras lobos “the Churchill” which was equally lovely but smaller/quieter.) would we stay at their hotels again ? Definitely Yes.

If this hotel was a gem it would be a diamond
From the moment we stepped into the Carlton we were blown away by the staff. Nothing was too much trouble.Also the hotel is beautiful we had a bay view room and it did not disappoint. When we went to our meals the staff were so friendly even putting up with my efforts at portuguese and helping me to learn. We had half-board and the food was 5 ☆. I could go on and on heaping praise but the bottom line is yes I would go again in fact we are already planning it. Also we would defiantly recommend it to others.

more like a good 3 star
We've just stayed at the Carlton for 7 nights, & to honest we were a bit disappointed. They rate them selves 5 star & Jet2 rate them at 4 star + but i would say its more of a good 3 star facility. We normally go adults only & wish we had this time as there were screaming out of control kids making relaxing difficult. I cant blame the kids, but their parent should keep them in check. Its their job. As usual, if you say anything you're just a party pooper & they're just having fun which i'm sure the parents would tell you they're entitled to. Well, also as an equal paying customer surely i'm also entitled to a peaceful holiday too. Adults only from now on. & wouldn't it be great if they did adult only flights too. But with that would come other issues, like drunk teenagers, 30 somethings & alcoholic grannies. I think alcohol should be banned in the airports & on the planes. I can wait 2 or 3 hours for a drink until i get there so why cant everyone else? This would benefit everyone including the airline staff. Back to the Carlton. Basically clean & in a good location with ok service. But we didn't get basics like mini bar contents, tea & milk replenished every day as advertised. We also paid extra for a room upgrade so this isn't acceptable & we even had a small amount of money stolen by cleaning staff from our room. Breakfast could have been nicer. (bit like feeding time at the zoo) plenty of choice but chaotic. Drinks were fairly expensive too at the hotel bars so we drank elsewhere mostly. Lots to do in the area, like the cable car (not much to see & pricey), botanical gardens (very hilly & also pricey, & the sledge rides. also very pricey at 40 euro for a couple. what they don't tell you is that it only takes you a third back down so you still need a taxi or bus. Best way is bus at under 5 euro for 2 - 1 way, all way down to the front (taxis are 15 euro). We did a jeep off road ride to the glass viewing platform (5 euro extra, but including a wine tour & tasting) through trip advisor for about 100 euro for 2 which we enjoyed. There are loads of bars & restaurants fairly close to the hotel so you don't need to go to the old town but we did both. Its about a 25 minute walk. The Prince Albert just down the road was good for live entertainment (much better than the hotels efforts) & try the Guinness pie. All in all, we enjoyed Funchal but probably won't return, as we much preferred the Algarve which was much nicer (lovely coast line/beach, cleaner & much cheaper to eat & drink out). If we did return though we would choose a better adults only hotel.

Perfect Pestana!
Stayed for 5 nights as a celebration for our 40th wedding anniversary. We were warmly welcomed at check in and although our room wasn't ready, as we flee in early we explored the hotel and grounds. Fabulous pool and had lunch in the pool bar enjoying a couple of beers whilst looking out at the incredible views. Our room was 1516 a deluxe city view which was spacious and had an enormous bed which was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was divine so much choice both hot an cold we certainly ate very well each day. The hotel provided us with chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne plus a personalised card to celebrate our anniversary which was a lovely touch. Our room was cleaned daily and everything was beautifully clean. The hotel has many different areas and bars to visit with wonderful views all the staff were so helpful, polite and friendly and that makes such a difference to any stay, especially a celebration. The hotel is very close to the centre of Funchal and around it are a number of restaurants to cater for anyone's tates and wallets. We'd definitely recommend the Pestana Carlton and we thank everyone for making our stay very special. Thank you all so much. Steve and Tania. Xxx
