The Muthu Raga Madeira Hotel is newly refurbished and offers a great range of facilities for guests to enjoy. The outdoor swimming pool overlooks the sea and surrounding areas. While those looking for a workout can take advantage of the hotel's treatment area.
One of the Muthu Raga Madeira's best attributes is its rooms. The contemporary styled rooms all have a furnished balcony with a table and two chairs, perfect for enjoying a relaxing drink in the evening.
All rooms are equipped with a flat screen TV, telephone, air-conditioning, mini-bar (filled on request and charged) and safe (charged). Land View rooms give an eyeshot of the hill behind the hotel while sea view rooms, which showcase the Atlantic Ocean and Lido promenade, are available at a supplement.
Situated just 15 minutes from Funchal, the newly refurbished Muthu Raga Madeira Hotel is located on the hillside in the Lido area, with easy access to the promenade, swimming pools and the sea. The hotel is close to a selection of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars. Due to its high viewpoint, the hotel offers outstanding views of the sea and surrounding area.
We actually went in September 2025 (apologies for the delay!) and all we can say is WOW. Absolutely incredible staff, nothing was too much trouble and we were always made to feel welcome. We had the privilege of witnessing a wedding whilst we were there and it was fabulous to watch how the staff worked so well together to create a special day for the happy couple. The only downside to that was being told we couldnt use the pool, the pool bar, or be in the vicinity of the wedding area for most of that one day. It might have been nice for the couple getting married, but there was little consideration for other paying guests who then felt a little put out as the wedding reception went on into late evening. Apart from that, this hotel is just fantastic. We only booked breakfast but all we can say is WOW! Beautiful seating area looking out to sea and the food...😍 The selection was the best we have ever seen, if you could think of it for breakfast, it was there! Beautifully laid out every day and the staff were so welcoming and helpful. I can't remember the lovely lady's name who was behind the pool bar but she was so so wonderful. In fact, everyone was, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left (we didn't want to leave!). An absolute gem in a brilliant location and with brilliant staff.
Firstly I like to say this is my own personal views and experience
Arrived by easyJet lunch time got told straight I couldn't book in until 3pm left bags in a small room couldn't see any facilities to get changed so headed to the pool bar finally got checked in at 2.45.
We stayed in room 411 supposed to be a superior garden view room yes it was spacious floor wise very little storage the bathroom looked tired with a bath and old style shower with lift up button some bright spark had decided to put a soap dispenser on the wall exactly where you need to stand the shower curtain sticks to you and the shower head went kamikaze and drenched all the towels. Despite being four stars there was no kettle tea making facilities but there was a fridge and the tv you can log onto your google account to get Netflix and Amazon prime.
We had booked bed and breakfast only and went down Sunday morning to basically couldn't get on when we did there was no glasses for juice the queue for the coffee machines snaked across the dining room no bread the cooked breakfast looked cold so we went out.
The hotel is in two parts the main building is just for bedrooms you have to walk a couple of steps to the second building where the restaurant is plus a lift that takes to more room but most importantly there is a lift down to minus 2 level where there is a corridor out to the pool and there is a small treatment centre.
The pool area was ok the sunbeds are old and some sagged and others was stained The pool bar closed and opened frequently there was no set pattern to it.
There are two ways out of the hotel one up a very steep hill the other if you head right of the pool there was a short flight of stairs down to the bottom road where you can find nice restaurants and shops the little cafe at the bottom of the slope was excellent and saved us when breakfast was too manic. I would suggest the Indian palace the food was amazing the best Nan bread I have ever eaten and the Chinese just along the road upstairs above the shops I will also suggest happy tours Antonio was amazing and organised is with a lovely trip on the Monday and car hire he even came down to greet us and to wish me happy birthday.
The staff at the hotel was amazing very polite and helpful we complained about the room bathroom and they kindly got things fixed but it's clear to see it's so dated and personally I don't agree with showers in baths as it's so dangerous getting in and out. They gave us a bottle of champagne but sadly we couldn't drink it. The other thing that got me was the 15 euros a day for parking you get given a card which you use to open the barrier at the top of the very steep drive. Also there was a charge for the safe and for pool towels.
Personally I wouldn't stay there again and i hope that the hotel gets a refit and I do think they need more staff as they all looked exhausted.
Small room, really smelled bad on arrival - musty, damp and unfresh. One mug and one spoon - for two people staying? Rooms need refurbing, rust and cigarette burns on balconies. Told that from 1st Sept, there would be a charge of 15EUR a day for parking which we didn't know about from Jet2 Holidays - frosty receptionist stood outside to watch us park and make sure we went in and paid. 10EUR towel deposit, 1EUR returned (not allowed to use the room towels) and then 10EUR to open the safe. Had dinner at the Italian night, we weren't late, but no lasagne left and didn't see it replenished. House wine included was disgusting and food mediocre. Very glad we were room only.
So we stayed in the hotel for a week on a B&B basis. Trying to think of constructive things to say! The hotel is at best a two star property. Investment is required before advertising it as a four star property: Decor: Tired and unimaginative Breakfast: Zero variety, the cheapest possible ingredients (for example soggy croissants and juice that had nothing fresh in it). Pool area: Tatty old loungers and had to pay 10 Euros deposit for 1 pool towel - first time in my life I’ve had to pay for a basic amenity. Then had to pay another Euro to swap it for a dry one. Room: Was cleaned daily - perfunctory and dull decor though. Staff: Seemed timid and apathetic. Laura on reception must have been absent the day the “Hi, welcome to Madeira, how was your journey?” greeting training was given. More of a sullen “no rooms ready until 3pm” not helpful when you arrive at 10am. The whole place seemed to lack any form of energy or proactive management, it felt lethargic, sad and under invested. I felt stuck in a 1980’s time warp in both decor, hospitality and management whilst staying there.
Better to avoid this hotel! In terms of the room, it was very unclean and there was a horrible smell especially in the wardrobe of mould. Hotel looked unkept even in the common areas including reception, and dead cockroach was seen in hotel. No entertainment or activities for families. Definitely not value for money and definitely not 4 stars, as advertised!
In terms of food (I will refer to breakfast only) quite repetitive, same- English breakfast, every day.
In terms of location- it is in a good area, close to touristic attractions, Funchal old town, CR7 museum, cable cars etc.
Walls are extremely thin and everything can be heard.
