This resort hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the tourist area of Lido, and offers magnificent ocean views. It enjoys direct access to the Oceanside promenade and the small pebble beach, Gorgulho. The town centre, the old town and Madeira Wine Lodges are all easily accessible. Madeira Airport is about 25 kms away. This is a modern and elegant hotel with a contemporary design concept. It opened in 2008, and improves the quality of accommodation options for both business and leisure travellers coming to Madeira Island. It has 220 rooms in total spread across 10 floors, as well as 2 fine restaurants, 3 bars and esplanades, and a ballroom with seating for up to 350 persons, where private events and celebrations may be arranged. The 6 conference rooms, offering flexible meeting spaces and equipped with web access, are the perfect places to host meetings and conferences.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
This is a 4-star property located 10 minutes drive to the center of Funchal surrounded by many restaurants, stores, cafes, banks and lively recreation activities. The view in the back is the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is dated (low ceilings) but delivers on comfort. Decor is subdued and simple. It has all the amenities you need. Clean & spacious rooms, efficient staff from check-in to housekeeping & restaurant. Bathroom is plenty big and very nice. The water pressure is perfect for a good bath. Choose the Royal Suite, if possible. Parking is provided free to guests. Breakfast in the big restaurant downstairs was a big spread. Value for price paid is fair. I will not hesitate to stay here again. Thumbs up.
It's not really five star here as many have said so let's not go on about that. The main test is would we stay here again and the answer is certainly yes and the price was definitely four star. The rooms were well appointed and the air con was efficient and not noisy once adjusted. The side sea view was good, some traffic noise with parking outside but cut off almost completely when the patio door was closed, the noise died down in the evening anyway. After seeing the half board reviews we went bed and breakfast but were convinced by the hotels discount offer to buy vouchers for 4 evening meals of which we had two very good meals ( meat, pasta and fish etc) one average meal and one not so good. The desserts and breakfasts were very good. Plenty of restaurants near by so we felt we achieved a decent compromise and we'd suggest what food is on offer before deciding to use your vouchers if you go for that. The hotel facilities are good, excellent gym, spa and indoor pool although you pay extra for the latter two. The outdoor pool is great with a scenic view. The usual nonsense of people sticking towels on beds before breakfast. However there was always plenty of room on the upper two sunbed areas which were quieter and suited us better. The staff were universally pleasant and attentive. Just two issues, Maderia including Funchal is universally hilly the hotel is well suited for a walk into town and also in the other direction along the slpromenade . This does involve a lot of ups and downs. The last trek up to the hotel could be easily avoided if the hotel had an access gate near the pool for guests to then use the lifts . If security is an issue then a gate only opened by your room card would resolve that. Secondly while the inside of the hotel is spotless the pool areas etc didn't seem to be washed down regularly. Stains were clearly present on the floor from drinks dropped there. Steps looked grubby and while the hotel employs a falconer to keep pigeons away (very successful at breakfast) the accompanying pigeon droppings on railings and floor were not cleaned away.Shame really if they are looking for details to be closer to actual five stars.
We had 4 nights in the top room (superior suite). It is not a private balcony you can be seen by other residents on the higher floor and other hotels. This is not a 5 star. We got fed up of constantly having to call reception multiple times for basics like a bottle of water (really we should have had two each night) we had three our whole stay even after asking. Our bedding was stained and bath towels also. Carpet needs a good clean, a kitchen provided but no waste was emptied, our glasses from the bar were not even moved. They provide two sinks yet only one soap attached to the wall on the far side of the other sink?! If I had towels in the state like they did, they would be donated to the local dog shelter. Breakfast was meh, coffee awful, the first day there was no labels to say what anything on the Buffett was. We hardly eat. We asked the receptionist for the location we should ask the bolt to take us for the toboggan. The bolt said they had given us the wrong location (the bottom of the toboggan) so we had to pay for a second journey. Glad we weren’t here any longer than we was.
This was our fifth stay at Meliá Madeira Mare and, once again, it reminded us why we keep coming back.
The hotel enjoys a fantastic location, comfortable rooms, beautiful sea views and everything we need for a relaxing stay in Madeira. However, what truly sets it apart is the people.
Across every area of the hotel, the standard of service is consistently outstanding. The team are friendly, professional and genuinely committed to ensuring guests have a great experience. There is a warmth and authenticity to the service that is increasingly rare to find.
Many hotels can offer similar facilities, but what makes Meliá Madeira Mare special is the atmosphere created by the people who work there. Throughout our stay we felt welcomed, valued and looked after, and that is what keeps bringing us back.
The greatest compliment we can give is this: we have already booked our sixth visit for November to celebrate our wedding anniversary and are planning to return again next June for a seventh stay.
That says everything about how highly we regard this hotel.
Highly recommended.
Enjoyed our stay here for a few days and overall very few complaints. Our major one was the quality of food on the breakfast buffet. Food was plentiful and service very good but the quality of the food was not very good. It is a large hotel with classic continental breakfast and some hot items. After 3 days we were ready to not eat there anymore. Our room was excellent and very large.
