We go here every year value for money and location cleanliness are great slightly let down by a little unfriendly bar staff miserable a little bit of a mood spoiler but saying that all the other staff are great especially the little Asian lady.. you can see why people return year after year to this hotel.. I would recommend this hotel.. and maderia amazing place
I arrived on 17th August and it was my second visit and received a lovely welcome. I have been visiting Madeira for the past 25 years and this is definitely amongst the best for service, friendliness and going above and beyond. As a solo traveller all of the above are extremely important . I would also give top marks for cleanliness, food quality ,customer service and all round courtesy. We stayed at Hotel Girassol for 5 nights on a bed and breakfast basis and, whilst there were some positives, I wouldn’t personally rate it as a 4 star hotel. In my opinion, it is more in keeping with a 3 star standard.
The rooms are in need of a refresh. There were dirty marks on the walls, grime in the corners and generally the décor is a little dated. The communal areas, on the other hand, appeared to be reasonably well maintained.
Before travelling I requested a quiet room on a high floor which is what I was allocated. Although you cannot shut the room doors without slamming!
Breakfast was okay, nothing particularly special.
Be aware that use of the spa facilities comes at an additional cost.
The location is good, with a bus stop conveniently close by, making it easy to get around and explore Funchal.
Overall, a reasonably located hotel with some good points, but the standard of the rooms let it down. We felt it fell short of what you would expect from a 4 star establishment. Fine for a budget holiday.
It was our first time in Maderia and obviously staying here but it won't be our last. We stayed for a week all-inclusive and due to a delay in our flight arriving me missed dinner, however, the hotel left cold meats and salad for late arrivals which was appreciated. From reception on arrival we were given all the information about the hotel we needed. Our room was a junior suite on the 3rd floor and although we had no view from the balcony (room 302) we don't spend time in the room anyway. The room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The 2 pools at the hotel and small but adequate and towels are provided by the pool. We never had any issue getting a sun bed and there certainly was no sunbed hogging. There is a bar and snack station by the lower pool where buffet lunch was daily. Dining room staff were amazing and catered for my vegetarian diet on request with no issue. Overall the hotel is not 4 star as we would call a 4 star in the UK but certainly a very good 3 star. The hotel is close to a bus stop for a short trip into central Funchal and a short walk from the Lido I would highly recommend the Eco dolphin catamaran trip.
If you are expecting 4 star experience, you will be disappointed this hotel is very clean but needs modernising. The food is mediocre and some nights the restaurant ran out of certain foods . The location is excellent for getting about. The staff are pleasant but if you are under the age of 65 I would definitely give this hotel a miss I felt like I was at a nursing home
