Our experience at Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve was extremely disappointing, particularly because of how management handled our concerns.
Upon seeing our room, we found it worn and poorly maintained, with visibly stained furniture. We immediately requested a different room and asked whether one might be available on a floor farther from the pool. Both the bellman and Francesca at the front desk told us that the hotel was “fully committed” and that no alternative room was available. We were offered no practical solution that would allow us to remain at the property.
As a result, we packed all our belongings, loaded the car, searched for alternative accommodations, and booked another hotel at our own expense. Only after we had completed that process and made it clear that we were leaving did management suggest that another room might become available, depending on another guest’s departure. This was inconsistent with what we had previously been told, and by then we had already made other arrangements.
The matter did not end there. We subsequently had to dispute the hotel’s charge with American Express. During that process, the property provided an account that did not accurately reflect the sequence of events or what its employees told us while we were at the hotel.
The central facts are straightforward: we requested a different room because of its worn condition and stained furniture; we were told that the hotel was fully committed and no alternative room was available; and we therefore packed our belongings and booked another hotel. The possibility of another room was raised only after we had loaded the car and secured alternative accommodations.
I travel frequently for work and have stayed at many hotels. I have never encountered such a poor response from hotel management. Our subsequent dealings with Carolina Caiado were particularly disappointing. Even more troubling than the original condition of the room was the hotel’s failure to offer a timely solution—and its later characterization of what occurred.
A hotel should be judged not only by its rooms and facilities, but also by how its staff and management respond when something goes wrong. In our case, this property failed on both counts.
The Algarve has many wonderful hotels. Based on our experience, I recommend considering the W Algarve or another property in the area.

From the moment we arrived at Iberostar Selection Lagos, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly reception team and offered a complimentary drink of water or cava, which was a lovely touch.We chose a Deluxe Priority Sea View Room, and it certainly did not disappoint. The room and views exceeded our expectations and helped make our stay even more special.During our 10-day holiday, we took part in several activities organised by the hotel, including soap making, wine tasting, and a cooking class. Every activity was well organised, enjoyable, and a great way to enhance our stay. The entertainment team were fantastic and also led the daily fitness and exercise programmes.The food was consistently excellent throughout our visit. Despite staying for 10 days, the variety and quality meant meals never felt repetitive. Every member of staff went above and beyond to ensure guests felt welcome, always greeting us with a smile and a willingness to help. Special thanks to Fernanda, Bruno, and the many other hardworking team members who contribute so much to the guest experience.A special mention must also go to Carolina, the Manager, whose leadership ensures everything runs seamlessly and efficiently.The location is another highlight. Lagos is only a short Uber ride away, or about a 40-minute walk along the scenic boardwalks, and is well worth exploring. We also highly recommend visiting Alvor, Carvoeiro, and Ponta da Piedade, where the coastal scenery and views are simply breathtaking.Overall, this was a wonderful 10-day break where nothing was ever too much trouble. Exceptional staff, excellent facilities, great food, and a beautiful location make this a hotel we would happily return to and highly recommend.
The hotel is on a great location, across the road from a beautiful sandy beach, 8 min by car to Lagos town and not too far from the airport (50 min by car). The hotel is spotless, we booked 3 double sea view rooms and all 3 were well stocked and well maintained, however the cleaning team amazed me each day - never seen such spotless rooms anywhere in Europe! As B&B nothing negative to say about breakfast, there are always good choices all made fresh including GF options. The downside would be lunch option. You can pay 37€ for lunch buffet which is not great but not as bad either, however would prefer to go in town for better food and prices, we’ve been charge for tap water which is first time I’ve been charge for bottle of tap water during a meal (~ €4). The pools and the surrounding is well maintained and looked after by the staff, the entertainment in September is not as good as during high season I’ll say reading other reviews, but is understandable considering the age range of the guest during this period of the year. Another downside would be the lack of staff around the spa - you’re given the option of leaving your luggage at the reception in case of a late flight, with the possibility of having a quick shower beside the spa, however there was no staff to provide towels or any assistance in case anything else was needed. Overall, the girls trip was a success as always but will recommend a different place for such trips. Thank you iberostar for having us.
Just spent a week at this beautiful hotel . We were on the third floor with pool and beach views everything was lovely apart from a few minor things the room was a little tired with the cover of the fridge door hanging off we just felt this wouldn’t of been difficult to fix! We had a bad experience the first day we arrived , We were bed and breakfast only , we arrived at lunchtime and decided to eat at the snack bar we ordered a goats cheese salad and cod croquettes and bread the salad was a plate of mixed lettuce with three small squares of goats cheese and a few pieces of dried fruit possibly apricot and a few tiny walnuts we felt it was very poor for a five star establishment the bread rolls were stale and soft we brought this to the attention of a very rude grey haired waiter who told us they were not stale it’s just the way they are ! We didn’t know where to go from there as we couldn’t eat them , a second waiter then asked us if everything was ok and we told him again about the bread he said yes it was stale but that was all they had we weren’t offered any other choice and this left us reluctant to try any other food other than than breakfast for the rest of our stay just not the treatment we would expect from a five star hotel ! We couldn’t fault anything else during our stay it was just unfortunate this put us off on our first day we felt disappointed with our treatment Other than that we had a perfect stay and would return again
My daughter and I had an amazing time at the hotel. We found the staff were extremely helpful and courteous from the prosecco offered on arrival to the help with luggage when leaving. We went all inclusive because we wanted to be poolside for reading with cocktails and it just felt such a luxury, especially with the drinks being brought to the sunbed. Our room was on the 4th floor with a poolside view and actually a very good view over the coastline up to Lagos. It was great for early morning but in full sun later. Really appreciated the little clothes drying rack and was glad I'd packed a few pegs. We could see the cranes over the opposite side of the hotel but never heard any construction noise. The room was plenty big enough for us and we didn't have any issue with the shared door for the toilet and shower. The air con was essential and a fantastic relief from a day in the heat outside. Blackout curtains were effective. I got up early to go for a walk on the boardwalk most days, first day I came down to the lobby and realised it was still pitch black outside! Adjusted my timings after that. We ate at the hotel and found the buffets always had something to try even if it wasn't the main theme. My daughter has a nut allergy, everything was clearly labelled but it did restrict her quite a bit, for example the potential for cross contamination when getting ice cream. But she really did enjoy the food she could choose. We liked the snack bar too for lunch, nice to have options. We had a couple of trips out using uber to Lagos and Ponta da Piedade but personally I loved the walk along the boardwalk at sunrise and paddling along the edge of the sea all the way back. Other things I appreciated were the cold water dispensers on the corridor, I had brought a bottle to refill with me but they did sell them in the snack bar, the indoor pool which was usually quiet and heated and the towels which were soft to use on the sunbed but even more comfortable with 2 towels- (I brought my own beach towel) otherwise your legs are in contact with the vinyl cushion. This hotel ticked all the boxes for us, we had such a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location, thanks to all the staff who work hard to make it a lovely experience
