Santa Eulalia Hotel Apartamento and Spa

Overall, the hotel was okay and there were quite a few positives. The rooms were nice, the pool areas were easily accessible, and the rest of the hotel was pleasant. Most of the staff we dealt with were also friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately, two incidents involving food really affected our experience.

After breakfast one morning, both my partner and I became very ill. She is vegetarian and I eat meat, so we had mostly eaten different foods, with only a couple of items in common. I became sick around midday and my partner followed about an hour later. We spent the rest of the day vomiting and were unwell for the following day or two.

We obviously cannot prove exactly what caused it, but because of the timing we suspected something we had eaten at breakfast. When we contacted reception while we were sick, we were told that the hotel did not have a pharmacy. The receptionist I later spoke to was apologetic, and I do not fault her personally, but I think the hotel could have handled the situation with a little more follow-up and assistance.

A few days later we ate in the hotel restaurant again. I ordered a chicken wrap and my partner ordered the vegetarian version. Both were missing some of the ingredients and sauces listed on the menu, but the bigger issue was that the lettuce in my partner’s wrap was visibly dirty. When it was removed, there was a noticeable amount of dirt on it. I have photographs of this.

This was especially frustrating after we had already been ill earlier in the stay. I raised the issue with staff, but the complaint was not handled particularly well and there was no real apology or explanation. For me, this is where the hotel needs to improve most. The rest of the hotel staff were generally nice, so I would mainly fault the kitchen and restaurant handling rather than the hotel as a whole.

We also had ants in our room, which was annoying. A member of staff came and sprayed insecticide, but I think the hotel would be better dealing with the root cause rather than simply spraying them when guests complain. A more guest-friendly treatment, such as an appropriate ant powder, bait or another professional pest-control solution, would also be preferable to spraying insecticide inside an occupied room.

The room itself was otherwise nice. Cleanliness was generally fine, although there were a few areas that could have been cleaned more thoroughly.

There are also some additional charges, including for use of the kitchenette, the safe and the spa. I was not particularly keen on these extra costs, but to be fair, the information is available before travelling, so guests can check this in advance.

The spa and gym were fairly basic, but there was a pool, sauna, steam room/Turkish bath and relaxation area. One piece of gym equipment was not working properly during our stay.

There was also live music at the weekend, which was a nice touch. It seemed poorly advertised though, as we only discovered it by chance and the turnout for the musicians was quite low. It would be worth promoting this more clearly to guests.

Overall, the hotel itself was pleasant, the rooms and pool areas were nice, and most of the staff were friendly. I would not say the entire stay was bad. The main issue for us was food hygiene and the way the restaurant complaints were handled. After becoming ill and then later finding visibly dirty lettuce, we understandably lost confidence in eating at the hotel. If the kitchen hygiene and complaint handling were improved, our impression of the hotel would have been much more positive.

We've stayed so many times now and the hotel is always like coming to a 2nd home , the staff are so welcoming and our room was 1 of the best we've been allocated, we was on the 4th floor with panoramic sea views from a big balcony , the room is spacious and bright & very clean Big pat on the back to lady on reception MJ ,she sorted out a small issue for us upon arrival without a problem, the guys behind the bar Claudo & John always make us very welcome We had breakfast included this stay and its really good an huge choices of breakfast food , Will be back next summer with out a doubt
