This luxurious hotel is located near to the impressive 16th Century bastions of Valletta and offers superb views across Marsamxett Harbour and Manoel Island. The Grand Hotel Excelsior offers standards of service and comfort that one expects from a 5-star establishment. A selection of fine restaurants give the hotel a wide reputation for its high standards of cuisine.
The hotel was lovely, however badly needs updating (The hotel is closing next February for about 18 months for maintenance and upgrades). On arrival, there were some issues with the room which were rectified very quickly. The staff were super friendly, polite and professional.
Breakfast: Although plentiful with a mix of cooked food, continental and cold buffet, the hot selection was only warm.
Location: Close to center of Valetta with a short walk up the hill. However, there is transport provided by the hotel to take you there if needed.
Amenities: There is an outside pool with some bars at the poolside serving food and drinks. There is also an indoor pool, Spa and gym.
Overall, our stay was very good and we had a fantastic time. I would recommend this hotel but personally I think one week wasn't enough.
Hotel was very clean and tidy, rooms spacious and clean, very poor view of a stone wall from the room balcony (superior twin rooms), extremely pleasant and helpful staff, buffet breakfast, whilst plentiful, food was not hot, only warm, evening entertainment was dire and typical of a very old fashioned hotel. The singer was dull and boring and induced sleep. Pool was very slippy and several people actually slipped while in the shallow areas of the pool with is an accident waiting to happen, otherwise the pool is excellent in size water temperature. Food from pool bars was excellent.
Great hotel Positives Reception staff- lobby area- welcome drinks- breakfast buffet- all excellent Negative- rooms are a bit dated and in need of some TLC and upgrades. We moved rooms and had some issues but they were quickly rectified 4-5 star in the public areas but rooms 3 star.
What a fabulous hotel in a perfect location. We would love to come back for a full holiday rather than just an overnight stay. The staff are lovely as was the breakfast!
My wife and I spent a week this September in a large and comfortable room with a partial sea view. In general, we had a very positive experience; our room was comfortable and spacious with a large balcony, staff were helpful and accommodating, breakfast was good, and the four evening meals we ate in three of the hotel's restaurants were good (once in the buffet, twice in the à la carte restaurant, and once in the open air restaurant by the sea). Two minor issues which shouldn't detract from our overall positive experience; there were insufficient electrical sockets in the room, plus, when the key is not in the holder that switches on the electricity all power is turned off - this made charging items very tricky at times, particularly the electric tooth brush as the shaver socket in the bathroom had no power when the bathroom lights were switched off; the system needs an upgrade. Second, the water temperature adjustment on the shower was a complete nightmare and it was very difficult to adjust it from dangerously scorching hot most of the time to an acceptable temperature without it going freezing cold - this plagued us all week. Overall, we had a very good experience staying in the hotel and found Malta quite wonderful.
