Xaghra

Overlooking green valleys and green pastures, Xaghra is one of the earliest inhabited areas of Gozo, which makes it rich in cultural heritage and history. This lovely inland village has an attractive and busy square at its centre, which is populated with traditional bars and newer restaurants.

When to go

The best time to visit Xaghra (especially if you are looking for the warmest time of year with the most sunshine) is July, August and September. April, May, June and July are the driest months, and December is the wettest month.

Top Attractions

As well as the Ġgantija Temples, which are well worth a visit, the Ta' Kola Windmill is an interesting excursion. Within the historic mill, there is a collection of tools, which were kept by the last miller who lived there. You’ll also get some insight into the rural lifestyles of Xaghra locals through the years.

Feeling adventurous? Ninu's Cave is a natural formed cave available for sightseeing.

Beaches

To the north of Xaghra is Ramla Bay, a stunning and secluded expanse of beach known for its distinctive golden red sand. The famous Calypso Cave overlooks the western side of this popular beach and can be reached by a sandy footpath which winds up the eastern hillside.

Dining

As well as a variety of restaurants and dining opportunities available in Xaghra, it is well worth visiting the Ta’ Mina Estate vineyard to taste some of the local wines. You can also buy the excellent tomato paste sold here, as well as other homemade products. You’ll also see how the wines and liquors are made, and can take a tour of the property. The Ta’ Mina Estate is actually the first agro-tourism site in the whole of Malta!

The restaurants in Xaghra serve a variety of foods. Dishes include European, Mediterranean, Italian and more.

Latini Wine and Dine, ll-Logga Restaurant and Cafe Reale are just three of the restaurants with great food that are well worth a visit.

Entertainment

There are a few bars in Xaghra where you can enjoy a drink and relax for an evening. Coronation Bar and Rubbles Bar are renowned for providing an inviting evening atmosphere with a range of drinks to enjoy. The great thing about the bars is the fact they are located right in the middle of the square, perfect for watching the world go by.

Culture

Xaghra is perfectly positioned to enjoy many of the island’s most fascinating sites such as the Neolithic Ggantija Temple Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest freestanding stone structures on earth.

What’s more, the local council organises various recreational activities such as the Fig and Traditional Food Festival.

Adventure and Sports

Xaghra has loads of options for sporting enthusiasts. Visit Xerri’s Grotto, which are amazing caves at the bottom of a spiral staircase in somebody’s home! You can also have a go at horseback riding with Lino’s Stables.

Getting around

It is recommended to hire a car in Xaghra. Although there are bus services, the buses are not overly frequent.

You can - of course - use taxi services and many places are accessible on foot. It is possible to fly into Malta airport and travel by car and car ferry, or bus and bus ferry to Xaghra.
