Mgarr

Located on the southern coast of Malta with beautiful beaches either side, Mgarr is the island's main harbour and is known as the gateway to Gozo.

This lively little port town is populated with bars and restaurants serving fresh seafood and locally produced wines. Many of the resort's hotels are located on the hillside surrounded by olive groves and most enjoy beautiful views of the harbour, the Mediterranean Sea and the Gozo channel.

When to go

The warmest months in Mgarr are June, July, August and September, all of which are pleasant months to visit. Of the three, July is the least humid. Temperatures rarely drop below 10°C in the winter and can reach the mid-30s in summer.

February is the most humid month and one of the coolest of the entire year. However, it’s still a great winter getaway so long as you pack an extra layer or two.

Top Attractions

There are a number of attractions to visit in Mgarr. Various temples, restaurants, beaches, bars and watersports centres provide a great range of activities for your holiday.

Mgarr Parish Church has to be one of the top attractions in terms of culture, while Gnejna Water Sports is a fantastic visit for adrenaline junkies.

Beaches

Gnejna Bay is one of the most popular beaches in Mgarr and is often rated with excellence by visitors. Enjoy bathing in the clean waters and wiggling your toes on the sand. There are water sports available on the beach, too.

Dining

Like most places in Malta and Gozo, there are loads of different foods available to eat in Mgarr.

Food choices include: Pizza, Seafood, Chinese, Italian and Mediterranean. Bancinu Restaurant is a great place for various food choices and even offers gluten-free options. Two other spots to check out are Ta’ Tona and Country Terrace, both of which serve delicious, local food.

Entertainment

A great choice for a night out is Il Luzzu Bar Gozo, located opposite the Gozo channel ferry terminal. Great food can be enjoyed with your favourite drinks, meaning you really can’t go wrong with an evening here.

In comparison to Malta and Gozo, the nightlife is indeed much tamer but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a tipple or two.

Culture

Mgarr is home to various temples. The Ta’ Hagrat Temples (excavated between 1923-1926) and Skorba Temples are two of the top choices.

The Ta’ Hagrat Temples is a surprisingly small site but fascinating nonetheless. The Skorba Temples span a similarly small site and date back to 3600-3200 BC. The Mgarr Parish Church – a huge Catholic church - is located right in the centre of Mgarr and is well worth a visit.

Adventure and Sports

Gnejna Water Sports is the ultimate Mgarr excursion for the adventurous tourists out there. The watersports are suitable for all ages. Choose from: Banana rides, sea taxi, speedboat trips, wakeboarding, kayaks, crazy sofa rides, paddleboats and more.

Getting around

In order to get into Mgarr by plane, you should take a flight to the mainland of Malta.

From Malta, Ferries and water taxis are popular ways to travel to the other Islands including Gozo, Sliema and Comino.

The Comino Ferries Co-op offers visitors to Mgarr the opportunity for sightseeing whilst taking a trip on a unique ferry ride. You can even take the option to view the caves whilst you travel on the ferry.
