This superior resort is located in Panormos. The resort boasts an exclusive setting, lying just a short distance away from a number of attractions in the area. Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
Rooms were ok, but towels were thin and greying. Bedding wasn't changed during our stay, even though I requested it twice. Towelling robes were greying and frayed under the sleeves and around the pockets. Pool loungers were very stained. Umbrellas were bedded into very heavy concrete bases, very difficult to move around for shade. No staff around to help. No lifeguard by pool.
I stayed at The Royal Blue for 3 nights and a solo traveller in late September. The hotel staff are it's best asset. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is spotless, modern and the decor promotes tranquility and relaxation. I stayed half-board and the buffet food selection had good variety and was of a high standard both in taste and quality. I used the spa and gym facility. The gym is large and reasonably well equipped although it was a bit dated. On one day the sauna was switched off or not working which was a little annoying. The only other observation was that the call buttons on the sun loungers by the beach area did not work, so you had to grab the attention of the beach bar staff. Minor gripes but for a 5 start resort, this should be working. Otherwise my stay was super enjoyable and I recommend if you want a relaxed atmosphere but close to the town of Rethymno.

The employees are top notch. Illektea,Maria,Anastasia and Apostados were all fantastic. They treated us like family.
Worth every penny.
My husband and I stayed here for a week. We had a suite with private pool, a lovely treat. Positives: Fantastically designed hotel and beach area. Very clean, fantastic staff and good buffet food at breakfast and dinner. Special mention to the night manager. We woke at 5am to a flooded room. My husband had to go to reception as the phones weren’t working. The night manager came with mop & bucket to clean up himself. It took a while but he saw it through with good humour! Negatives: Very little allergen advice on the buffet options, sometimes no labelling at all. The garden/pool is not secluded from a busy path/staff entrance at all. A privacy screen of some description should be erected until the hedging has grown. Although we were told there were “courtesy rooms” for use after checking out we discovered this is untrue. You literally have to use the sauna/steam room locker area!! No towels, changing cubicles or privacy. A sour end to our fabulous holiday.
