This delightful hotel is located just 38 km from Chania and 28 km from Rethymnon. This charming hotel greets guests with traditional Greek hospitality and style. I stayed at Georgioupolis Beach Hotel for a week in September as a solo traveller. On arrival, I was told I had to change rooms after just two days. I was offered an upgrade to persuade me to accept, but I didn’t want an upgrade — I simply wanted the room I had booked for the full seven nights. I felt I had no real alternative but to agree. Then, on day four, while I was on a day trip to Chania, I was told I would have to move rooms again, with no prior warning. I refused to return from my trip to pack and move yet again. Thankfully, when I returned that evening, I was told I could stay in my room after all. By then, however, the damage was done. My day in Chania was ruined because I spent it worrying about having to return and pack up my belongings. I complained and asked for some compensation or goodwill gesture for the unnecessary stress and disruption. The hotel declined. Two potential room moves in a seven-night holiday, poor communication and no goodwill whatsoever. I wanted a relaxing holiday, not the stress of constantly wondering where I would be sleeping. Very disappointing.
We arrived late evening having booked a Deluxe Double Room only to be put in a very tired and dated self catering room in a block just up the road from the hotel, on complaining and pointing out what we had actually booked and paid for we just got told that's the only room available. We contacted our tour operator who said they would try and sort it out the next morning so we had no choice other than to spend the night where we were put on rock hard beds. On visiting reception the next morning we were still told there were no other rooms available but then later, presumably after pressure from the tour operator we got called to reception to be told they had at great inconvenience to themselves found us another room. We never had a hint of an apology and were made to feel like we should be really grateful to them for sorting it to which I pointed out they should put people in rooms they had booked and not just what the hotel feels like putting them in and just got a shrug of the shoulders and taken to our new room. This room was still not a Deluxe room as shown in the brochure and we realised after a while that it was actually an adjoining room with a door between the next one that had just had a large shelving unit put either side of the door meaning the sound deadening was pretty much non existent. The nice walk in shower shown in the booking was a small corner shower that had mould around it and we also found as time went on all our clothes were slightly damp. The people that run this hotel don't give a damn about what people have actually booked and paid their money for and speaking to a couple on the way back to the airport it's clear they must double book the rooms as they should have been in our hotel but got moved less than 2 weeks before arrival due to lack of rooms at our hotel (lucky people). I don't get the 5 star reviews on this hotel as even if you take away our horrible experience here it's just an ok place. Breakfast very hit and miss as to what was available and sometimes hot but sometimes cold. Pool is good albeit not very big or deep. Most staff are very friendly and helpful. Food in the evening is plentiful and decent choice and well cooked. The area is brilliant with a fantastic beach and lots of small shops to wander round. The hotel opposite was a negative for us as they felt the need to try and entertain the whole town every evening though to be fair they did stop before 11 pm. Overall I have never in all my time taking this type of holiday (which must be 50 plus times over the years) been treated like we were and the owners/reception staff should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for showing no respect for the booking we made and the amount paid to them. I would never dream of returning to the hotel but would definitely consider returning to the area.
We stayed here for our honeymoon and to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We had communicated both occasions by email, at the time of booking and again before arrival, so we were disappointed that neither was acknowledged at check-in or during our stay. When we asked if anything could be done to mark the occasions, we were simply offered an upgrade at full cost. We declined.
Unfortunately, there were quite a few things that made the stay disappointing. We had three days of rain, which obviously wasn’t the hotel’s fault, but the condition of the hotel was particularly noticeable in the poor weather. Floors and walls were wet and the hotel generally felt a little unkept. Our room was adequate but had a strange smell throughout our stay, the bathroom sealant was cracked and the fridge made loud noises intermittently throughout the night. The rooms are also in need of some updating. Not being allowed to smoke on the balcony also seemed unusual.
Breakfast was very basic and lacked attention from staff. On one morning we couldn’t find a table and had to ask staff to separate one for us. We also repeatedly had to ask for basic items such as bread, cereal and milk to be replenished.
The rooftop was unattended for three days. The hot tubs were barely warm, and one released dead skin and hair from the jets when switched on. There was nobody on the rooftop to report this to. The gym was also very poor, with old equipment, tangled cables, a treadmill displaying an error code and both bike screens not working.
We emailed the hotel twice during our stay to express our disappointment that our honeymoon and birthday had not even been acknowledged, but received no response. My husband eventually spoke to reception, where the response felt quite cold and we were told that they simply “don’t do that” there. On our final day, we were offered a glass of wine each via WhatsApp if we dined in the hotel restaurant, which felt very late and more like an attempt to resolve the complaint than a genuine acknowledgement of our celebrations.
Overall, the hotel has potential, but we expected better attention to detail and customer service, particularly for a special occasion that had been communicated several times in advance.
Absolutely fantastic hotel . We upgraded to the suite thanks to the lovely receptionist . Outstanding room . The staff are all amazing and the food is lovely . We will be back . 10 out of 10 thank you ❤️
We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at The Georgioupolis Beach Hotel and can highly recommend it. The position right by the sea is perfect and you have easy walking access to all the local amenities. The food is superb with stunning views from the rooftop terrace. However, what made the holiday for us were the friendly, helpful and attentive staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely return to this hotel in the future.
