Chania is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, surrounded by sublime beaches, historic treasures and natural wonders. Just a five-minute walk from its central square and on the main road leading to the rest of the region, the Akali Hotel offers an excellent base for discovering the town and all of Western Crete. What makes the Akali Hotel special is the mix of world-class services and local hospitality. This is the only hotel in the four-star category in the middle of Chania that has a swimming pool with garden, as well as the only central one with dedicated conference rooms, making it very popular with vacationers and businesspeople alike.
Don't miss out on recreational opportunities including a fitness centre and a seasonal outdoor pool. This hotel also features complimentary wireless Internet access, concierge services and babysitting (surcharge).
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
We stayed at the Civitel Akali Hotel in Chania, Crete, for nearly three weeks and overall had a pleasant experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive from check-in to check-out. Our clean room had a veranda overlooking the pool, a pretty restricted view to be fair, as adjacent buildings and trellises surround the pool. The hotel is well-equipped with amenities, including a mini fridge, kettle, and copious amounts of coffee and tea sachets. There was even an iron and an ironing board. The bed was comfortable and made up each morning by room service. WiFi was good and all-pervading around the hotel, including the pool area.
The hotel's location is close to all useful services, including well-stocked supermarkets, laundrettes, and Western Union, for instance. From website photos, there is a sparsely equipped gym, which we did not use, but we were by the small pool frequently, and it is fair to say that, because of the surrounding buildings, only selected parts of the pool enjoy sunshine. Most of the time, it is in shade, and we found ourselves chasing sunbeams along its edge every so often. It is also shallow and uninviting. Few guests spent time there. On the plus side, beach towels are provided for the sun beds. The beach is not too far away with pay-as-you-use sun beds and parasols.
Hotel breakfast is an all-you-can-eat hot and cold buffet. However, the morning fry-ups proved too greasy for the wife. It also could have been a lot warmer. Initially, we stayed at the nearby Nefeli hotel for a night due to overbooking, and we found it had an edge on the Akali in terms of room spaciousness, food and an open-spaced flat roof perfect for sunbathing.
Where the Akali excels is cleanliness and, above all, hospitable and courteous staff.
In conclusion, we recommend the Civitel Akali for anyone looking for a comfortable, convenient, and welcoming place to stay. Would we return? Yes, but we'd check the Nefeli first to see if it could accommodate us.
Akali is a lovely hotel, rooms are satisfactory and breakfast is great. 10 min walk to the old town. When you book, you should keep in mind that the pool is small, much smaller than it looks on the photos. Internet in the room is patchy.
Staff is very responsive and helpful.
Great location and beautiful hotel with lovely pool and fab breakfast, but where this hotel stands out is for its customer care , I had a reason to leave the hotel early from my stay and the kindness that the manager Xirouchaki and the receptionist Rena showed me was unbelievable, they actually cared and helped me a lot - thank you ! 🩷 I would highly recommend this hotel
The Civitel Akali in Chania, Crete is a genuine 4-star hotel. I say genuine, because some places are 'rated' 4-star but would struggle to achieve 3 stars. First impressions are important. The foyer is expansive, the front desk staff are attentive and friendly, and the cold drinks and snacks are welcome treat. Our standard room was on the small side but serviceable enough. Thank the Good Man for A/C because you needed it! A feature was the range of bathroom giveaways, such as shaving kit, dental kit, shampoo and shower gel. A negative was the lack of soundproofing from the busy road and traffic noise went pretty much well into the night. The view from these standard rooms is really nothing to write home about. The hotel boasts a pool, but sunbeds are in very short supply so if you want to work on your tan, I suggest taking a 10 minute walk to the nearby sandy beach. Akali’s buffet breakfast is very good, the seating is more than adequate although a larger variety of fresh fruit plus a dedicated eggs chef would have been beneficial. All in all, a very pleasant stay in a very pleasant hotel.
The hotel itself is very nice. We stayed in a Superior Room with a city view, which was comfortable and pleasant. The location is perfect, close to everything, and the breakfast was also pretty good.
Unfortunately, our experience with the service was very disappointing, especially considering that we stayed for about a week.
At check-in, we informed the reception that we would need a late check-out because our flight was late. We were told that this would be arranged before our departure day. We followed up several times during our stay, but despite these reminders, nothing was actually arranged.
Then, at the very last moment, we were told that a late check-out was not possible. We were offered the option to store our luggage and use the pool and shower facilities instead. However, the shower available in the hotel garden had ice-cold water and was not at all what we would expect from a four-star hotel.
What disappointed us most was the lack of proper communication and care from the reception team. In particular, our interaction with Rena was frustrating. Although she gave the impression that she cared about our situation, the actual service and outcome did not reflect that.
It is a shame because the hotel itself is lovely, with a great location, a nice room, and a good breakfast. However, good service is an important part of the overall hotel experience. Unfortunately, because of how our situation was handled, we would not choose this hotel again and cannot recommend it to others.
