Protaras is many people's first choice Cypriot holiday destination. It's easy to see why. With its great modern facilities, it makes the perfect spot for such a wide variety of people – many of whom choose the Cavo Maris Hotel. It's the ideal place for singles, couples, and families; for those that want to see and do everything, and for those who want to lie back, soak up some sun and take things really easy.
A couple of hundred yards further down the beach is Green Bay – a tourist must-see – with another excellent sandy beach. The sights and sounds of Ayia Napa are just five miles away – and there's plenty more of Cyprus to experience – all within easy reach of Protaras. Whatever kind of holiday in Cyprus you want, the Cavo Maris Hotel in Protaras is the place to experience it.
One of the first things you'll notice about the Cavo Maris Hotel is its location. Set on the seafront – just yards from the beach, it's a picture perfect place to relax. The rolling grounds lead down to a perfect strip of sandy beach and the glittering blue Mediterranean.
Recently refurbished air-conditioned/heated en suite rooms have a balcony and feature satellite TV with English video channel, music system, telephone, hairdryer, safe#, iron and board#, use of empty minibar, FREE Wi-Fi, beach towels and tea/coffee making facilities. Side Seaview and Seaview rooms are available at a supplement.
Of course, the spectacular swimming pool is another big attraction at the Cavo Maris Hotel. And you'll love the swim-up bar. For those that don't want to get out of the water, there's a programme of additional watersports activities on the beach. Even water polo!
Families are well-served with a host of activities for children. While everyone can enjoy the two floodlit tennis courts, table tennis, mini gold*, and array of games on offer.

The hotel has many facilities and services for guests who are wheelchair users or have mobility difficulties. The hotel features lifts to all floors and ramps to all areas, a swimming pool lift, adapted toilets in public areas and in the spa. Please note, if you require a specially adapted room - you will need to call our reservations team to confirm the availability for you.
The Cavo Maris is a popular hotel, located in a beautiful, unspoiled, seafront location in Protaras, amongst extensive grass lawns and beautiful gardens which run down to a safe beach with fine golden sand and crystal clear sea water, awarded the blue flag. Within 2 minutes walk, there are 2 more secluded beautiful beaches. The Famous 'Fig Tree Bay' beach, at the Resort centre, is about 1.5 km down the road (15 minutes walk). A local bus service is available to the centre of Protaras (1.5 km) and Paralimni, the biggest town of the area (9 km), or to the nearby bustling resort of Ayia Napa (9 km). Larnaca International Airport is about 59 km away.
We always stay in September and absolutely love our visits. The staff are so lovely and friendly and the whole hotel, inside and out, is always clean and tidy. Our side sea view room was really comfortable and quiet. We love the location of the hotel, it is perfectly situated for us away from the hustle and bustle of Protaras centre. To go into the centre is only a 25 minute walk or a short bus ride. We stay bed and breakfast which gives us the choice of trying some of the fabulous restaurants in Protaras as well as the ones at the hotel. There are plenty of sunbeds for all. We prefer the sunbeds in the garden areas, they are quieter and more relaxing. The ones by the pool are often noisy with families with kids. The pool and adults only jacuzzi are really nice and, like the sea, usually warm. My husband was taken ill while we were there this year and had to visit the hospital for antibiotics. The hotel staff were fantastic during this time and the care and attention we received was genuine and heartfelt, thank you. We have already booked for 2027 and can’t wait to be back.
Today I had the most amazing experience to the Vitality Spa and wellness center . From the time I arrived to the spa I was sure I will have the most wonderful experience. The spa manager Sophie was very welcoming and friendly. She gave me the locker key to be prepared before my massage . They have a very professional way to approach the clients as they waited for me outside and guide me to the relaxing room filling up the client form. The spa therapist Kristy she introduced herself with a smile and we went to the massage room. I asked for a strong massage. She was concentrating to my stiff areas with a flow, the procedure was very relaxing and all my experience was more pleasant than my expectations. After the massage they treated me with a glass of champagne and fruits . Definitely I will visit the Spa again for a massage as they made my day. Thank you so much ladies ❤️❤️
This has got to be one of the nicest, well run hotels in Protaras. Amazing hard working staff from the pool bars to main bar. Lovely people. A credit to Cavo Maris. Max, Petra, Aneta, Petrio. So hard working and friendly. They made our holiday. Max and Petra will go far in this hotel if given the opportunity. They have the ability to progress. Fantastic bar staff and great with all guests. Christina in the buffet restaurant works so hard. Lovely compassionate hardworking lady. The main bar Kim, truly is a credit to Cavo Maris. Dennis, Kevin too. , Kyle (who has a fantastic voice by the way) they all work so hard with a smile looking after all the guests. Christos in the main bar never stops! Our room lady was brilliant. We were very well looked after. She was always smiling! This is our 8 th time at this hotel. Amazing as always. We were sad to leave. Thank you to Cavo and all the staff for another truly amazing holiday!
On first impressions, Cavo Maris is absolutely beautiful. Lovely grounds, spacious and nicely decorated rooms, and what should have been the perfect setting for a relaxing family holiday. Unfortunately, a beautiful hotel doesn’t count for much when the service, cleanliness and overall atmosphere let it down so badly.
Let’s start with the positives, because there genuinely were some. The pool bar staff were absolutely fantastic, always friendly, welcoming and happy to help. They’re a real credit to the hotel. Christina and Comfort in the restaurant were also lovely and made us feel genuinely welcome. We also had an issue with our original room, which was resolved quickly by moving us to another room. Credit where it’s due.
Now for the rest.
Apparently, ordering a drink is one of the more challenging activities at Cavo Maris.
White wine and lemonade? Soda water. Rosé? Red wine. Pineapple juice? Orange juice. Two Pina Coladas? A 40-minute wait, followed by the wrong drinks. We even managed to receive Prosecco glasses for our wine. At this point, ordering a drink felt more like a lucky dip than a normal bar experience.
And heaven forbid you politely ask for something to be corrected. One member of staff called Luexmi, responded by rolling her eyes and storming off. Apparently, expecting to receive what you’ve actually ordered is a bit too much to ask.
The swim-up bar wasn’t much better. We used it exactly once. The member of staff was far too busy on his phone to serve guests, I was waiting almost 5 minutes for him to even acknowledge me. When I asked for pineapple juice, we were told it wasn’t possible, despite pineapple juice featuring in drinks on the menu. Impressive stuff.
Hospitality also seems to be a bit of an optional extra.
Asking for extra cutlery in the restaurant was regularly met with looks of disgust, and a surprising number of staff seemed utterly miserable to be there.
The most disappointing part was how we were treated as a family with a two-year-old. Despite the hotel advertising children’s facilities, it certainly didn’t feel particularly child-friendly.
Our daughter accidentally smashed a plate in the restaurant. It was cleaned up quickly, and I immediately apologised. What followed was a series of dirty looks and eye-rolling from staff. Because apparently, a two-year-old accidentally breaking a plate is an unforgivable offence.
On another morning, housekeeping actually shouted at me after my daughter had an accident during the night. I’d already stripped the bed myself and simply asked for fresh bedding. A little understanding and basic manners wouldn’t have gone amiss.
The pool area: beautiful in the photographs, questionable in reality.
One morning, we counted 17 glasses abandoned around the pool, crawling with ants. Rubbish was left on the floor for days, empty plastic cups were scattered around the pool edges, and there seemed to be little effort to regularly clear anything away.
There aren’t enough bins, the area doesn’t appear to be properly swept or mopped, and the pool surrounds are incredibly slippery. The grassed areas become sludgy, and by midday the whole place can look rather grimy.
The restaurant chair cushions were another lovely surprise, visibly dirty and appearing to have mould on them. Not exactly what you want to be sitting on while enjoying your holiday.
The children’s entertainment deserves a mention of its own.
The children’s entertainment takes place in a dark, tucked-away outdoor area with no proper seating for parents and nowhere to order a drink. There were just two mini discos during our stay, and even those seemed to miss the mark when it came to the classic songs you’d expect. Although I must say the magic show was as amazing
As for the other evening entertainment, apart from the glass-balancing act, which was genuinely brilliant, it was largely someone sitting and singing rather morbid songs. Not exactly the lively holiday atmosphere you hope for. If the aim was to send everyone to bed early, mission accomplished.
And finally, the wardrobe. Whoever designed the storage clearly wasn’t expecting guests to bring clothes. A tiny rail with enough space for around five or six items is hardly practical for a family holiday.
The bottom line
Cavo Maris is a hotel with so much potential. The building is beautiful, the rooms are lovely, and the pool bar team, Christina and Comfort prove that good hospitality is absolutely possible here.
But a beautiful building cannot compensate for poor attitudes, repeated service mistakes, questionable cleanliness and a general lack of warmth towards families.
We came away feeling that, despite the hotel’s impressive appearance, the actual guest experience was a long way from the standard we expected.
And honestly, these are just some of the issues we experienced. There are plenty more I could highlight, but I think this review already says enough about the kind of experience we had.
A beautiful hotel is one thing. A genuinely welcoming hotel is another. Unfortunately, Cavo Maris only managed one of those.
We stayed in September as a family of 4. Our rooms were lovely, clean and modern. We always ask for a sea view on holiday, which was stunning, and watching the sunrise in Protaras never disappoints.
The hotel is located about 20mins walk away from the main strip, and right next to Green Bay Beach.
We went to the strip every night for some entertainment.
The hotel is spotlessly clean except around the front of the pool area, which has a lot of mud being walked up from the grass areas. This needed regular cleaning during the day, which didn’t happen and made the pool side look really grubby.
The staff were all really friendly and happy. Probably the best staff we have seen at a hotel, they are a real credit.
We stayed all inclusive plus and are so glad we did. The main buffet restaurant really lets this hotel down. It is FAR too small for the number of guests, the long queuing for food (or pushing in by a lot of guests) was not pleasant and the food underwhelming. The other restaurants however were amazing, the food and service were exceptional and portions huge! The drinks were of a really good standard throughout the hotel
All in all we had a lovely holiday and made lots of memories; just a couple of points that could be improved
