Olympic Lagoon Resort Ayia Napa

We’ve just returned from our 5th stay at Olympic Lagoon Resort Ayia Napa, having first visited around seven years ago. We’ve always loved this hotel, which is why we’ve returned so many times, but unfortunately I feel this may be our last visit for a while.

We are a family with four children, so we booked two rooms, both with private gardens. The rooms were clean and well maintained, as they always have been, but they are essentially the same rooms we stayed in seven years ago. Apart from what looks like some repainting, I can’t see any meaningful investment or improvement in them.

The price of staying here has increased dramatically over the years. At the current price point, I think it’s reasonable to expect some of that money to be reinvested into the accommodation. New furniture, updated rooms and general improvements would make a big difference. The hotel is still nice, but the price has moved considerably while the product itself hasn’t really moved with it.

One of the positives is the staff. A lot of the same people are still working here after all these years, which says something good about the hotel. It’s also nice as a returning guest to recognise familiar faces.

The reserved sunbed system remains one of the best things about Olympic Lagoon. The newer live-screen system is also a huge improvement over the old book system, where you had to keep checking and trying to work out availability.

However, I was disappointed with the lifeguards this year. Far too often they seemed more interested in their phones than actually watching what was happening in the pools. The pool rules also seem a little strange. Inflatables are no longer allowed, yet ball games are allowed, meaning you regularly have adults throwing balls around the pool and over the heads of young children. I’d much rather see children allowed to enjoy an inflatable than have balls flying around a busy family pool.

Scoops has also been improved by being enclosed, which makes it much cooler and more comfortable inside. Unfortunately, the actual ice cream seems to have gone the opposite way. It tastes more like a cheap, watery substitute than proper ice cream, which is disappointing for a resort at this price level.

The evening entertainment is still good, but after five visits it desperately needs refreshing. Many of the shows are the same ones we’ve seen year after year, including the same magician. They are still enjoyable, particularly if it’s your first visit, but returning guests need something new.

The Kanika All Stars were a completely different group this year. They were very good and clearly talented, although for us they didn’t quite have the same magic as some of the original groups we remember from previous years.

That probably sums up how we feel about Olympic Lagoon now. It’s still a good hotel. It’s clean, the staff are generally great and there are things about it that we still really like. But somewhere along the way it seems to have lost some of the buzz and special feeling that made us keep coming back.

I also think the hotel could do much more for loyal returning guests. After five stays, there doesn’t seem to be any recognition or special treatment for repeat customers. Even a small gesture would make loyal guests feel valued.

When you combine that with how dramatically the price has increased, it becomes difficult to justify returning again.

We have some brilliant memories here from our five visits, and I’m glad we came back again. But unless there is some meaningful investment in the rooms, facilities and entertainment, or the pricing becomes more reasonable, I don’t think we’ll be returning anytime soon.

Holiday was amazing! Hotel was clean and all staff were friendly and very helpful. Awesome waiting team at the you&me bar! Khaled in particular was very hospitable and made our holiday very enjoyable. The day and night entertainment was really good with the evening shows being a stand out! The Greatest Show was 10/10. For 16 years, we've enjoyed visiting this beautiful hotel with its excellent staff and facilities. Sadly, it's hard to ignore that the entertainment has become the worst we've ever experienced. The hotel, which was once adults-only, is now just another kids' pool area, with noise and children taking over. It's very sad to see this hotel, once a 5-star, heading toward a 3-star rating. If only the adults-only pool could be restored, so we can all relax again, considering children already have access to about 80% of the pools plus the indoor pool. The management should also observe the shows and take action before it's too late. This place holds a special place in our hearts, and we've been coming here for many years since it was an amazing hotel.
