Ancient temples, idyllic beaches, huge landscapes and fascinatingly unique culture, Sri Lanka really does have it all.\u00a0To help you\u00a0get\u00a0the most\u00a0out\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0fantastic\u00a0picture opportunities which will be available when visiting, we got\u00a0in touch with two professionals,\u00a0who\u00a0have agreed to let you in on\u00a0some of the secrets to capturing\u00a0the island at its finest.<\/p>\n

Photographers\u00a0John Alexander<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0Matthew Williams-Ellis<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>travelled around Sri Lanka together, and\u00a0returned home with some fantastic images. The two professionals\u00a0captured the nation\u00a0very\u00a0differently,\u00a0and both had images from the trip\u00a0finalised in the Travel Photographer of the Year competition.\u00a0Considering\u00a0their wealth of knowledge in travel photography,\u00a0as well as their rich\u00a0experience of capturing Sri Lanka, we couldn\u2019t think of any two people better to ask for their top tips.\u00a0So let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n

What was it that made\u00a0you want to travel to Sri Lanka?<\/h3>\n

Matthew Williams-Ellis:<\/strong>\u00a0I was keen to visit a destination that offered variety, both in terms of subjects to photograph and interesting places to visit. The draw for me was the combination of traditional ways of life, historic temples and beautiful landscapes\u2026being able to photograph in shorts and flip-flops at 5am is always a plus too!<\/p>\n

John\u00a0Alexander:<\/strong>\u00a0I was looking for a country which would offer us a diverse portfolio of images such as epic vistas, street portraiture and wildlife photographs, as\u00a0having a broad range of subjects always makes a trip interesting.\u00a0Also,\u00a0it goes without saying\u00a0that\u00a0it needed to be significantly warmer than the UK in March!<\/p>\n

How did you find photographing the famous Sigiriya Rock, & what tips would you offer to people wanting\u00a0to capture Sri Lanka\u2019s temples at their best?<\/h3>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0For me, the impressive thing about Sigiriya Rock is the way it towers above the vast plains below,\u00a0so\u00a0–\u00a0while scaling the\u00a0clifftop\u00a0temple\u00a0was fascinating\u00a0–\u00a0like John,\u00a0I\u00a0preferred\u00a0the view from\u00a0Pidurangala.\u00a0It was the perfect way to show Sigiriya\u2019s true scale, and\u00a0we only saw one other couple the whole time we were there.<\/p>\n

The most obvious tip I would give to capture Sri Lanka\u2019s temples\u00a0is the oldest in the book\u00a0–\u00a0arrive at sunrise.\u00a0Exploring any destination at the crack of dawn will not just reward you with the best photos, but also makes for some of the most unique travel experiences. Beyond that, one lesson I always teach in my photography workshops is\u00a0to look for\u00a0details,\u00a0colours and\u00a0patterns, and don\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0photograph the whole temple in one shot.<\/p>\n

JA:<\/strong>\u00a0Sigiriya Rock is an amazing sight. The expansive view from its summit was impressive,\u00a0but as a photographer I wanted to photograph the Rock rather than be on top of it!\u00a0We were recommended to climb Sigiriya\u2019s neighbouring rock, Pidurangula, and from there the view of Sigiriya took my breath away. It\u2019s a much easier\u00a0climb and there are almost\u00a0no tourists there! If I were to give someone a tip it would be\u00a0to climb\u00a0Pidurangul,\u00a0It was the best view of my trip.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve both photographed Sri Lanka\u2019s famous stilt fishermen; how did you approach the task differently?<\/h3>\n

JA:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>I had seen so\u00a0many photographs of the stilt fishermen; it was the reason I booked my ticket,\u00a0but I wanted to find something different to everyone else.<\/span> We arrived before sunrise\u00a0both mornings, just as the fishermen waded out onto their stilts. I started photographing them with a long exposure, capturing the motion of the waves rolling in below them. Then, once the light\u00a0had lost\u00a0the\u00a0subtle\u00a0twilight\u00a0colours, I switched from landscape photography mode into portrait.\u00a0I decided to swim out, after getting the go-ahead from one of the fisherman\u2019s friends, with my camera over my head and madly treading water. The gamble paid off and I took a I was really happy with from behind him in the surf with my wide-angle lens. This shot eventually got selected\u00a0as a finalist in the\u00a0Travel Photographer of the Year Competition.<\/p>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0I approached the stilt fishermen quite differently to how John did.\u00a0On the first morning, I focused on photographing them\u00a0fairly close up from the shoreline, with blurry waves around them. When I was reviewing the photos, I realised that what really creates the atmosphere is the setting. The following morning, I headed to the headland, where I could photograph them as part of a larger landscape. As a result,\u00a0this photo\u00a0\u2013 along with a few others –\u00a0was picked up by National Geographic\u00a0Traveller\u00a0Magazine, to be used in an\u00a0article on Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

How did you approach photographing the ancient capital\u00a0of Kandy,\u00a0& what advice would you give to people photographing it?<\/h3>\n

JA:<\/strong>\u00a0I loved Kandy\u00a0too,\u00a0the hustle and bustle created a unique atmosphere that completely contrasted with the rural feel from the rest of Sri Lanka. I\u00a0photographed the city using\u00a0a slow-shutter speed to show that frenetic pace of life. When I\u2019m travelling, I always try and request a room with a balcony,\u00a0it\u2019s a convenient\u00a0way to get some great shots, like this below.<\/p>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0There is so much to\u00a0see and photograph in Kandy;\u00a0The Temple of the Tooth, the markets, the Botanical Gardens and my personal favourite, Kandy Lake. As soon as I walked around it on the first day, I knew there was a great landscape shot to be taken. I chose this as my sunrise spot, but had to return on more than one occasion in order to capture it in the best light.\u00a0As most of the market is covered, I knew I would be able to take portraits here and capture the hustle and bustle of the city during the day.<\/p>\n

How would you recommend photographing the Sri Lankan coastline?<\/h3>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0For me, the key to\u00a0photographing\u00a0the\u00a0Sri Lankan coast is shooting\u00a0at the right time of day, which is about 45 minutes\u00a0either side of sunrise or\u00a0sunset.\u00a0In,\u00a0general photos will look much more dramatic at either end of the day. Also, try to keep your photos simple and uncluttered, with a clean composition. Find an element of the coastline that is impressive and\u00a0make that the focus of the photo.<\/p>\n

JA:<\/strong>\u00a0The Sri Lankan coastline has breath-taking variety. Personally, I love rugged coastal shots rather than those with blue skies and palm trees, as my aim is to fill my images with as much drama as possible. This involves getting as close to the action and hoping for some dramatic light<\/p>\n

How did you find Sri Lanka\u2019s tea plantations to photograph, where the world famous Ceylon tea is produced?<\/h3>\n

JA:<\/strong>\u00a0Visiting the tea plantations\u00a0brought another completely different feel to the photographs of our trip. We spent most of our time\u00a0here just\u00a0exploring, as well as\u00a0finding subjects to photograph. If there was a landscape shot that looked promising\u00a0–\u00a0perhaps in\u00a0different lighting conditions –\u00a0we would ask a tuk-tuk\u00a0driver to\u00a0take us there at an opportune time,\u00a0so we could return to the shot we had pre-visualized.\u00a0When we did come across tea pickers to photograph,\u00a0we\u00a0asked (by pointing at our cameras and smiling ridiculously)\u00a0and stayed with them for around 30 minutes as they picked the leaves.<\/p>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0Photographing in the tea plantations was definitely one of the most enjoyable\u00a0aspects of the trip. Picking tea is a surprisingly energetic activity, as we found out when they let us\u00a0take part. I wanted to convey this in my photos,\u00a0so\u00a0I\u00a0slowed down the shutter speed to add movement to the\u00a0hands and as such, breathe a bit of life into the photo.<\/p>\n

How\u00a0would you recommend travelling when in Sri Lanka?<\/h3>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0One thing that is key as a travel photographer is flexibility, so we\u2019d often\u00a0find a tuk-tuk driver we liked the night before and ask\u00a0him to pick us up\u00a0early\u00a0so\u00a0that we could drive\u00a0into the countryside for sunrise. Probably the most exciting form of transport was taking a train to Haputale from Adam\u2019s Peak. Sitting and watching the tea plantations role past was perfect, and even provided more photographic opportunities itself.<\/p>\n

JA:<\/strong>\u00a0Ideally, I would hire my own self-drive tuk-tuk and stop at the side of the road whenever\/wherever I spot a potential photograph.\u00a0The next best thing is to order a tuk-tuk for a period of time, and direct\u00a0the driver\u00a0wherever you would like to go. It\u2019s cheap, it\u2019s fun, and it\u2019s convenient.<\/p>\n

How did the two of you approach photographing popular tourist locations, was it a challenge to find good spots in busy cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa?<\/h3>\n

MWE:<\/strong>\u00a0When it comes to photographing popular tourist destinations, the key is to look for new angles and to use different techniques. In Polonnaruwa for example, as storm clouds rolled in and most people were ducking for cover, I set up my tripod and captured a long exposure of clouds passing over stunning Kiri Vihara, as you can see below.<\/span><\/p>\n

JA:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Temples are not\u00a0my preference for shots, Matt,\u00a0however,\u00a0seemed to be on a mission to photograph every\u00a0single\u00a0one that Sri Lanka had to offer! Although, just because I didn\u2019t want to photograph the temples, I had an amazing time photographing all the locals around them so I was in my element. There is always something to photograph if you look for it!<\/span><\/p>\n
