Whether you are after vibrant celebrations, delicious seasonal delicacies or just a change of scenery this April, an Easter overseas can be a wonderful and memorable experience. Here we take a look at some of the best ways to celebrate from around the globe.
Cyprus
A Cypriot Easter is a welcoming and vibrant time, marked with delicious foods and jubilant celebrations. The smells of traditional Cypriot foods fill the air, along with the scent of orange blossoms and the buzz of excitement. The lighting of huge bonfires and the carrying of candles feature largely in Cypriot festivities, as well as fireworks, music and feasting.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan Easter weather is dry and warm, and you will be likely to catch passionate Easter celebrations in many areas of the country, especially in coastal areas such as Negombo. Hang around until the 12th to 13th and you’ll catch the fireworks, festival music and wonderful traditional foods on offer at the Buddhist New Year.
Australia
Spend your Easter in Sydney and you’ll catch the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Australia’s largest annual event, celebrating many aspects of Australian culture and heritage. The show takes place over a two-week period and is not to be missed. Be warned, though, that in Australia it won’t be the Easter Bunny fuelling your chocolate consumption. Our friends down under instead celebrate the Easter Bilby, a small grey endangered species with long soft ears.
Dubai
If you fancy a change of scenery this Easter, but still want to create incredible memories with your family, Dubai could offer the perfect break for you. The Emirati people make a great efforts to stock up on Easter treats in this period, and routinely hold an Easter brunch with a twist, including hot and cold mezza and grilled delicacies. On offer for children are egg hunts, egg painting and festivities to ensure that they have an Easter to remember.
Malta
No matter where in Malta you find yourself this Easter, you will be guaranteed an amazing celebratory atmosphere. In the days preceding Easter, a sombre and spiritual mood can be found around the island. Biblically-styled worshippers parade towns and cities carrying commemorative statues and Churches are stripped of their ornaments. Come Easter Sunday, however, the mood completely changes. A risen Christ is carried through jubilant streets, and festive tunes fill the air. Easter in Malta is a time to enjoy ‘figolla’ – a traditional iced almond pastry – as well as chocolate eggs and special meals.
Bali
Ok, Bali is mostly Hindu, but it has proven itself as a great place to enjoy Easter for a variety of reasons. Areas such as Nusa Dua, Kuta, Sanur and Seminyak have high numbers of expatriate Christians who ensure that Easter is a time for celebration on the island. This, coupled with the wonderfully tolerant Balinese attitude to people of all faiths, means that Easter can be an exciting and wonderful time to visit Bali. Spend Easter on this small Indonesian island and you will find hotels and locals pulling out all the stops to ensure you and any travelling companions have a holiday to remember.
Morocco
Desperate for some sun after a long winter? Why not visit Morocco this Easter, where you are almost guaranteed great weather. To add to this, you can enjoy activities such as camelback riding, exploring the beautiful coastal town of Agadir, or just lazing about on the beach.
